Anyone have HCV and MGUS secondary to HCV (did meds help)
« on: January 28, 2016, 04:44:51 pm »
Hello

Discovered a M Spike by my PCP, referred to hematology, and was told I had MGUS secondary to HCV and I had to have the Harvoni as I have mild Cryoglobulemnia mixed type as well.

The m spike was really found only by me telling my doctor I have tingling finger tips.

Anyone else w this diagnosis, and did the harvoni treatment help all three diagnosis of manifestions associated w HCV.

currently on week 9 harvoni.

Never heard of MGUS but found this

Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is a condition in which an abnormal protein (monoclonal protein, or M protein) is in the blood. M protein is produced by plasma cells, a type of white blood cell. Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance usually causes no problems.

We are all in uncharted territory right now with so many who were incurable before being cured. Only time will tell where we all go from here but curing hep c is a big step in the right direction. Probably the best person to ask is your hepatologist.

Jack, it sounds like you have doctors who are on top of things and know that MGUS can be an extrahepatic manifestation (EHM) of HCV. Lynn is right that clearing HCV is an essential first step. When I saw my hepatologist this January 6, I asked which of my other conditions would also go away now that I was cured of HCV, and he said that time would tell whether they were EHMs (in which case they would go away) or separate diagnoses. HCV has been recognized as the cause of more than 90% of mixed cryoglobulinemia (MC)
[ http://patient.info/doctor/cryoglobulinaemia ], so the odds are great that your MC will go away once your HCV is cured. Here is a great medical journal article about all the EHMs, including MC and MGUS ["MGUS are present in up to 11% patients with HCV infection."]: http://www.jgld.ro/2007/1/10.pdf
9/29/71 transfusions
HCV genotype 1a
7/09/15-9/30/15 Harvoni

Before treatment:
Viral Load 9,490,582
FibroScan 19.5 kPa [F4]
ALT 262
AST 217
ALP 183

Most recent:
VL still UNDETECTED (SVR 102)
FibroScan 7.6 kPa [F1-2]
ALT 15
AST 20
ALP 85
