While a liver biopsy is an invasive procedure, it is still the most accurate way to gauge liver disease/damage. It is a very quick procedure and you can ask for something to help you relax should you become anxious (I did).

It's over in about 1 second and the physician will use an ultrasound to guide the procedure.

Best wishes, Mike

I've had two liver biopsies.  One in 1977 and another in 2007.  Agree with Mike, it's over before you can say, "sliver of liver."  There are some on here that had a bad experience, but not me.  It wasn't painful and there were not any lasting effects.  I just felt a little pressure on my side.  In 1977, they made me lie on my side for a few hours after to control any bleeding.  In the 30 years after that, someone must have decided that wasn't necessary because I didn't have to do it in 2007.  All they said was to take it easy for a day or two.  Even considering that I had a big needle stuck between my ribs and into my liver, it was pretty much no big deal.  Hope the same for you.

My opinion:  given that you can get the best data regarding your liver condition, it's worth the momentary discomfort of a biopsy.  Good luck!

I didn't have any restrictions after I had mine. Just in case, check with the doctor.

Best wishes, Mike

Same here, no specific restrictions. I can't remember whether I worked next day or not, but I could have.  Truly my clearest memory is that it was no big deal.

I'm really surprised that your doc or clinic didn't give you some kind of info sheet on things like how to prepare, what to expect, and how to recover.  This isn't info that you should have to drag out of them.

Here is a good article from Mayo Clinic, where coincidentally, I had the most recent biopsy.  It says no lifting.  Perhaps you could still work but be on light duty.  As Mike said, ask your doc or nurse.   Good luck!

Ive had two biopsies.. The first was in 2008 and was NOT fun.  The only anesthesia I got was an injection at the biopsy site  of a local which did hardly anything to numb the pain of the biopsy needle and was quite painful in a stinging kind of way in its own right.

The second was done in 2013 at a different hospital by my hepatologist and that experience was entirely different.  They started an IV line into which a mild sedative plus fentanyl was injected... As a result, during the biopsy, while being completely awake and alert, I felt NOTHING!  Seriously.. A mosquito bite hurts more!

So, the biopsy experience is entirely influenced by the skill and care of the staff performing the biopsy.. It can be akin to torture, or, it can be a sweet walk in the park.

Hopefully, yours will like the latter!

Well, biopsy was done yesterday. Not very pleasant at all.  The only anesthetic I got was some numbing shots at the site. It hurt like hell. They went in at the top of my abd not my side. Which of course is the exact spot my abd pain originate. If I ever have to have another I will redise unless i get some kind of twilight anesthetic. I felt like I  couldn't take a fulk breathe for hrs after. Taking care of my children was hard. Since I have only told 2 people about any of this, but if this helps me get closer to tx then it is all worth it.

Hi Missa,

Sorry you had to go through that with a local only. My first was done that way and they went through the ribcage, that was also unpleasant. The second was a CT guided aspiration and they knocked me out with Versed. That stuff works! Hopefully this will be your last biopsy. They are getting better with the Fibroscans now and I would investigate that next time, if necessary. Good luck on the results!  :)
