So quiet
« on: July 20, 2015, 09:05:41 am »
I am surprised things are so quiet on the 3 forums I view.  Not at all like it was in 2007.  Post after post.

I interpret this as 1 of  2  things:

1.  Things are just quiet in the summer

2.  The new drugs work with little/mild side effects.

I hope it is #2!

I have noticed this forum being quieter over the last few days. I have joined a Facebook page as well but find this forum invaluable still.

I hope it just means 2.) that there is nothing to talk about.  I am doing Harvoni X 24 wks.  Compared to scratching my way thru a week of Incivek and dragging my butt thru the clinical drug trials for peg-intron (both unsuccesful), Harvoni is so far, so good.  No side effects to speak of.  My 14 wk labs came back non-detect.  Looking forward to being virus free for the first time in nearly 40 years.

Perhaps the focus of the discussion needs to be on prevention of new infections.  I have recently read several articles on a recent spike in HCV infections due to a rise in heroin use.  I would not wish HCV on anyone and hope that the increase treatment success does not give others a laissez faire attitude towards preventing infection

It may be because there is just nothing new to report - we are in the waiting game.  I'm at 12 days to go on vpak and riba with EOT blood work the beginning of August. RBC steadily dropping, hemoglobin steadily dropping - other than that, no news is good news! Happy Summer and here's to kickin' HCV's butt!

Another reason for quiet: some of us are near the end of our treatment. And if we've got ribavirin in the mix, we may be a bit hammered by anemia toward end. Just 4 more days to go after today. :)

Ain't that the trurh Kim! And if not full blown anemia,  very low numbers playing with our energy. I can't believe you're at 4 Days to go! so great - take care and can't wait to see your EOT results.

Last day of treatment today (12 weeks vpak and riba) - bloodwork tomorrow. In my mind I can do everything but my body is so tired - dragging actually. I do push myself and do what needs to be done - it just takes me longer. Will post results when I get them. Then the 12 week wait begins! Good luck to all!  Prudence

Philadelphia I just wanted to say that I recently listened to your interview (first one, the one on Soundcloud) and I found your voice and tone and pace to be so soothing, so soft, so nice that I feel asleep 3 times during the interview. I'm not joking. I really wanted to listen to it all so I had to stand up and fold my clothes while listening to it.

I'm very happy you decided to do the interview. You put it very nicely, and have provided me with a much better tool to fall asleep to! It's like I'm listening to my mom telling me a bed-time story all over again, and I'm a grown up man. Thank you.

I'm new on the forum also, even though I have referred to it almost daily for two months.  I finally wanted to chime in.

Since tonight is my 28 Harvoni pill (one month complete, two to go), I have found it so helpful to see those that have walked before me and their tips, how they dealt with side effects (validating that they exist with or without treatment is in and of itself supporting), the support of each other, successes and the reality checks that we all have to deal with.  It made my experience much more palatable.

I guess there is a new batch of us coming out...still we are early adopters, and it's only normal for those finishing treatment to carry on with life, especially since it might be one of the first times that we don't have to think about Hep C all the time and enjoy life and/or recover from treatments plus it's summer too, which I'm sure keeps people busy.

Please don't forget us newbies and I'll try to remember to when I'm on the other side.    All my best wishes to everyone!

Hi  everyone, I am a newbie in the forum & have yet to start Harvoni. I am waiting for approval.Reading all the posts have been the best medicine so far as the fear of treatment was in many ways as bad as the disease. You all have helped me conquer the fear to take the steps I need to take to get rid of this horrible burden.I have carried the secret since my mother died. I was diagnosed right before her death & didn't want to distract from all the sadness in 2009. My hep Dr. told me there were treatments coming..... to be patient . Do you have to have a biopsy before starting or is a fibroscan the norm?

Hi Rosie, and welcome to the forums. I just had a fibroscan prior to starting treatment. Haven't had a biopsy for 18 years. I think a lot of people are starting on the new treatments with just fibroscan or fibrosure (blood test). Some still seem to be getting biopsy though. May depend on doctor or on person's prior history. A biopsy can give more information about overall state of liver and other issues beyond stage of fibrosis, and sometimes that may be useful.

Good luck!

Hi Rosie!

Welcome!

I have a liver biopsy about 4 years ago and the doc didnt think I needed another one.

I guess that and my liver labs (lfts) told him that my liver was in pretty good shape since I am only on treatment for 12 weeks.

some people get a fibroscan others get a biopsy.  Fibroscan is not available in my area.

I think either of those along with your blood work will give your doc a pretty good idea of your liver health.

Rosie,

ps - yes, you will have to have either a biopsy or fibroscan.  I think most insurance companies require it and it is necessary to determine length of treatment, esp. if you are not approved for  harvoni and instead are approved for viekira.

good luck!

I had two biopsies.  I had pain after the first one (not during the procedure) , but nothing unbearable and they gave me some pain killer rx that worked well.

The second one  , no residual pain what so ever.

No biggee and I think that the biopsy is probably a bit more accurate than a fibroscan.

I actually read a post ( on this website?) where a guy had a fibroscan that showed no cirrhosis, but his liver panels where high... his doc ordered a biopsy and turned out he indeed had cirrhosis.

And they need to know the amount of liver damage to determine length of treatment in many cases.

Anyway, if you do have a biopsy, don't be scared... it doesn't hurt at all during the procedure (at least in my experience) but there may be some pain later for a day or so.

Hello Rosie, I have had two biopsies done & they were no big deal. Minimal discomfort. Granted it is an invasive procedure but low risk and much more reliable. Try not to worry to much, anxiety causes stress & You don't need anymore added. Talk with Your Dr. & tell him what is on Your mind.Talk with the techs and nurses at pre-op check & they usually will put You at ease. You won't usually see the biopsy Dr. much as the meds will have You a little loopy but not knocked out (at least You won't remember seeing him much) You are not usually knocked out completely so they can talk with You & monitor procedure. Not a Dr. or expert just My experience. Hospital staf really put me at ease for both procedures. If You feel the need, ask to talk to the Dr. doing the biopsy before meds are administered. Askwhat Your regular Dr. about what He requires before You make the decision.
Please excuse the lack of info. on signature. Get 4 week lab results Monday & will update then.
