Avatar Feature Options
« on: August 22, 2015, 12:08:42 pm »
Hello,

We have had a couple of inquiries about the avatar feature so wanted to post information for all.

First, we have disabled the Upload option due to hacker efforts to use it to exploit the Forums.

If you would like to add an avatar here is the process...

* Click on the PROFILE option along the top Forums navigation.
* Under Welcome click on Modify Profile and select Forum Profile.
* You can then select an avatar from our gallery or provide a URL of a custom avatar you host elsewhere.

Best,
Hep Forum Moderators

Thank you, Moderators. Those instructions will help a lot of forum members.

I would be happy to post instructions on how to obtain a URL required for a custom avatar (for those of us who don't host the avatar elsewhere). But first, given that there seem to be limitations that prevent some custom avatars from being accepted, I need to know:
1) What is the maximum pixel size? 120x120 pixels?
2) What are the allowable file formats? JPEG, GIF, anything else?
3) Is there a maximum file size?

Thanks! I appreciate all the work you do to provide this support community.

Re: Avatar Feature Options CANNOT INCLUDE any GOOGLE Drive spaces CONTENT!
« Reply #2 on: August 24, 2015, 12:38:50 am »
Unfortunately the changes made also disabled embedding secure https links to google for all forms of content! So the pictures of fish and so forth that I have posted to the site are now only available as redirects. I can do straight url linking and that is all but they are all just common linking not embedded so the individuals wanting to show secure pictures from their google drive space are all now out of luck.

The sad part is that other content storage places on the net that only use highly insecure non encrypted http based linking can post anything.

So I do not now if the changes that you made really were a security enhancement as stated! I just hope someone did not convince you that all Google content was not secure! But I would not at all be surprised if this is what has happened.

Sorry Lynn I just got a little frustrated trying to use my favourite one even though it is small enough for an avatar. It seems https host sites no longer are allowed to inline content. Here is the ditty I wanted to use but you will have to view it as a remote link not an inline content because non of the google drive content can be used for anything other than an off site link. The forum software rejects google drive content even though I have set the view permission and link attributes correctly on the server side. So it is the forum client side that is bouncing the content request because it begins with an https instead of http.

I thought that this little ditty is more appropriate for how I feel about coffee lately. LOL

https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipN8cTvZFl5VPulcvTbEs8Y5_e1vUL-gTr5ITt73OtqQKpVl6dVHORQJesXHV31wQw/photo/AF1QipPWyLw5sZePIzbzkpa5jLCMqgn8YUCw5UymzrBy?key=clItcFZGMmc3ZTdVaHo3Y1M5U3dNcUk4SjFjdGhn

But as you can see the shareable link is correct but the forum software will not use it inline as an avatar even though it meets the required size and is a current item. And all photos hosted on google cannot be used inline in posts any longer.

So something changed that removed remote access to all google content by the forum software.

That is all I am saying has happened. I will keep trying in my account settings but somehow the security changes made seem to have Bjorked all google hosted content.

I have never posted a pic because I have no idea how to here.

Got no idea what that means Google hosted content. What is hosting? I only know how to search on google that is my sole interaction with Google

Don't know about remote links or in line content as I said no comprende.

Ps cute photo no idea how you did that and basically I understood nothing about your explanation. I am a machinist and tool and die maker I know how to program a CNC milling machine to fabricate a part. Don't know jack about survers and settings

That's what happens when you jump out of perfectly good 'planes!

I am having no luck with using pictures that I have stored online not because I do not know how to use the forum software but because the forum software is blocking access to content from some sites. And it is definitely blocking content from google sites like my google drive space. For instance if I use the img tag which looks like this <img> but only in square brackets to link to something like this https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipN8cTvZFl5VPulcvTbEs8Y5_e1vUL-gTr5ITt73OtqQKpVl6dVHORQJesXHV31wQw/photo/AF1QipPWyLw5sZePIzbzkpa5jLCMqgn8YUCw5UymzrBy?key=clItcFZGMmc3ZTdVaHo3Y1M5U3dNcUk4SjFjdGhn and only if I do not use a forum based link so you can click on the monster size link above and not know what you are actually going to see. Who knows you might see something like this HORROR show that starts with John Dillinger then leads to a Chinese restaurant dish, and ends with a picture of the most terrifying fish ever seen because the fish looks like an old science teacher I once had in the 1960s!
Here is the share on google
https://goo.gl/photos/fM4BvAkfky1ixVHaA

Anyway you look at it, the forum does not work correctly with simple image content from google any longer which is silly.

Oh and this one is worth repeating because my old science teacher is really scary!

I have now posted the instructions I wrote for Lynn. They are in this Off Topic Forum under the title "TURN A PICTURE ON YOUR COMPUTER INTO YOUR AVATAR." The direct link is http://forums.hepmag.com/index.php?topic=3234.0

Enjoy!

P.S. My avatar (from a photo I took of a Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher) shows you how large 120x120 pixels is.

Great to 'see' you, Lynn!!! I plan to get my own mugshot up there at some point. And thanks for being one of the moderators. I really think it is you guys who set the tone for these forums and keep them running so smoothly for all of us.

I really am that much of fish magnet. Chick magnet, well that is long over LOL. Thanks gnatcatcher I did have this pic in this size and form ready on Google drive but the old TinyPic is still the best answer for forum content.
Here is one that I wanted to use but again because the url does not end in the file type the forum rejects it
so here it is posted as content to tinypic.
Funny but the more people mess with software the more stuff gets in the way to mess up simple functions that used to work!

This pic is from before I quit smoking and supporting the government and tobacco with my cash!
So far so good, almost a month without a puff...BUT when I drink coffee now I turn into a real PITA and feel like jumping out of my skin. So I guess I had better cut down on that addiction or drive my wife nuts!

I didn't realize how addicted to coffee I have become until I quit smoking. What a fuss if I don't guzzle some caffeine in the morning.

I am starting to think as your liver heals drugs like nicotine and caffeine effect us to a much greater extent than they did when our livers were in bad shape. So the positives of freeing oneself from HCV can be more than just the recovery of better overall liver function in a hurry but the ability to reference the real damage done by addiction to many substances.

Lets see, I no longer drink booze, smoke or do drugs. I guess I should put myself up for beatification I might make the short list if I keep this up!

Cheers
Eric

AND YES THAT IS MY MUG UP THERE
