Pregnancy On Harvoni?
« on: August 31, 2015, 01:31:47 pm »
Hello Folks. The year of 2015 has been an awful roller coaster ride. I was diagnosed with Hep C through an Infertility Doctor of all things. My wife and I had been trying to conceive for a long time... so we turned to the doctors to figure out what the deal was. Some routine blood work revealed that unbeknownst to me... I was infected with Hep C. My wife however tested negative and clear.

My doctors prescribed Harvoni which was immediately denied by my health insurance policy. After 10 months of fighting I won the battle and received my harvoni medication. And just days before I received the medication we received the good news that my wife was finally pregnant.

It seemed like everything was finally working in our favor, I started my treatment immediatly after receiving it and she was pregnant.

However, today we received the completely awful news that the fetus has stopped growing and she has miscarried. She's too upset to talk about what our next step will be but I can't help but wonder.

My doctor told me that we should not try to get pregnant while I am on Harvoni. He said it's because there's not enough data to prove it's safe. He said that I should wait 3-6 months after my treatment to start trying again.

I know this may sound like we're in too much of a rush, but this has been a long road and we're going to want to start trying again immediately.

Given that I am the male in this equation and my wife is perfectly healthy and HCV negative what kind of risks are we looking at if we try again? Have any of you gotten pregnant while on Harvoni? Male or Female?

Thank you for your advice... sorry for the long winded post. I needed to vent.

Life is sure exhausting!

That is quit a roller coaster ride.  :o

As much as I can understand wanting to have a kid, it might be better for the baby to wait until after you treated for the virus. I doubt there's much data regarding pregancy and Harvoni since it hasn't been out a year yet. If you're on a 12 week TX you're only looking at 24 weeks total to start trying again. I would probably want to wait until the harvoni has completely left the system so that you know the sperm cell is a healthy one. If you're talking about having a baby, why take any chance?!

My ex-wife got pregnant, while taking birth control, while I was on interferon, which was a no, no. She ended up spontaniously aborting, which in my mind, was a good thing. If it was me and it isn't, I wouldn't want to take a chance that I caused my child to be born with some sort of birth defect because I was taking a medication that could be potentially damaging to a fetus.

For all we know, it could cause a mutated sperm that only has one eye that swims in an endless circle  :o That's just my opinion and I'm not saying it to sway you one way or the other. I just know what, I think, I would do in this situation.
Pre Tx (VL 12043488) ALT 52/ AST 39
Harvoni Start Date 03/12
2 Week in Tx Results HCV RNA Detected, less than 15 IU/mL. ALT 19 / AST 19
4 Weeks in Tx Results HCV RNA Not detected. ALT 21 / AST 18
12 Week in Tx Results HCV RNA Not detected. ALT 17 / AST 19
--------------------------------------------------------------
Post 12 Week EOT Tx ALT 19/ AST 19 (Undetected)

I would ask the doctor who prescribed the Harvoni and go with their recommendations. Plus it gives your wife's body time to recover from the miscarriage
Genotype 1a
1978 contracted, 1990 Dx
1995 Intron A failed
2001 Interferon Riba null response
2003 Pegintron Riba trial med null response
2008 F4 Cirrhosis Bx
2014 12 week Sov/Oly relapse
10/14 fibroscan 27 PLT 96
2014 24 weeks Harvoni 15 weeks Riba
5/4/15 EOT not detected, ALT 21, AST 20
4 week post not detected, ALT 26, AST 28
12 week post NOT DETECTED (07/27/15)
ALT 29, AST 27 PLT 92
24 week post NOT DETECTED! (10/19/15)
44 weeks (3/11/16)  fibroscan 33, PLT 111, HCV NOT DETECTED!
I AM FREE!
