Alkaline Diet while on Harvoni
« on: October 04, 2015, 08:57:47 am »
I just started taking Harvoni a few days ago. I am a Geno type 1. I have had Hep C since 1985. Tried Inferno and Ribavarin for almost a year in 2005 with no positive results but a lot of side effects. Now I'm eating more of a raw diet and I am liking how I feel on it. I gave up all processed foods and meats and dairy and coffee due to many of them being acidic. I have Stage 4 Cirroshis but I am currently not have any major systems. Improving my diet has helped me immensely so far.  Now I am seeing that Harvoni works best in a acidic environment? So does this mean that I should eat and drink more acidic type of foods and beverages? Thanks in advance for your responses!

Welcome to the forums and to the Harvoni journey, Juliopapo! :)

I think the important thing about Harvoni and acidity is that the stomach not have reduced acidity while the Harvoni is in it. (It's actually the ledipasvir in the Harvoni that requires an acid environment in the stomach and is neutralized in an alkaline one.) This is why they say no Tums or other antacids within 4 hours either side of taking Harvoni. I would not worry too much about your alkaline diet since I believe that mainly affects the alkalinity of your blood, which is a good thing for health. And there are no listed restrictions on what foods to eat or when to eat while on Harvoni. In fact, I think the instructions say you can take it with or without food. Just be careful to not take stomach-acid reducers within 4 hours of Harvoni.

best,
kim
