Just diagnosed w/ HepC..Shots for A&B?
« on: March 14, 2016, 11:41:11 am »
53 year old female... just informed I have HepC. I am pretty scared and know little to nothing about this... Doc says I need to go get vaccinated for A & B... should I do that before I get in to see a GI doc? This is just really a path I dont' want to walk down..... ugh.

I asked my doc about that. He said he's less worried about B, as it is largely transmitted sexually and I'm married. Also likely because I'm OLD too lol - he didn't mention that, but I'll bet he took that into consideration.

He did say he'd order a test for A markers (I might have been exposed and killed it at some time in my life) at my next blood test. If no antibodies, then I guess I'll need a vaccine.

Sorry, I can't second-guess your doc; all I know is what mine said.

I remember how I felt getting the diagnosis. A nurse told me over the phone (!!); I felt like I had been hit smack-dab in the chest with a wrecking ball. Once you sit down, breathe, and start informing yourself about options it all begins to get a little less overwhelming.

Best of luck - you've found the right place. There are experts here, plus plenty of caring people if you just need to unburden.

The sooner the better on those vaccines, before or after doesn't matter. Your insurance should pay for them

As Lucinda said the sooner the better.

Surely we don't need the risk of a second type of hepatitis. I believe as of right now there is no cure for hep B so who need that.

Thanks for the input.  I was just concerned that the A / B vaccines might skew or alter any tests that might be done once I get to see a specialist.  I actually have been scheduled to see a GI Doc on April 1st... so if I am interpreting correctly, I should go ahead and get the A / B vaccines?

You are interpreting that correctly. The vaccines won't affect the tests and doing them sooner will protect your liver sooner.
