Pantoprazole 40 mg and Harvoni
« on: April 05, 2016, 03:56:37 am »
Hi Every one,

I have question is there any interaction between "Pantoprazole 40 mg" and Harvoni ?

I'm under treatment for 6 week with "Pantoprazole 40 mg" and soon I'm going to start my harvoni for 12 weeks.

I asked my physician and he not answer me clearly he said no problem ! with no details. :-X

Thank you
Merai

Hi,
Any drug that decreases acidity in the stomach is not a good idea when taking Harvoni, as ledipasvir requires an acidic environment for absorption.  Many people I know who simply can not do without their stomach meds have chosen sofosbuvir/daclatasvir instead.
There is some very detailed information on this topic at FixHepC.com.

Hi Coach Mike,
Thanks a lot for your post I will read that topic at fixhepc.com.

So I shall return back to my doctor prior to start Harvoni to see if I have to stop the "Pantoprazole 40 mg" .

Hi Fighter
Pantoprazole is in the same family of medicines as Prilosec it is a PPI or Proton-pump inhibitor and should be taken per the prescribing information sheet instructions for PPI's:

"Proton-pump inhibitor doses comparable to omeprazole 20 mg or lower can be administered simultaneously with HARVONI under fasted conditions."

As your dose is higher that could be a concern unless Pantoprazole 40 mg is equivalent to omeprazole 20 mg.

I discontinued taking Prilosec (omeprazole 20 mg) while I was on treatment I have frequent GERD so it was a long 24 weeks.

If you can take your Pantoprazole you will need to take your dose at the same time as Harvoni on an empty stomach. But if you can avoid taking Pantoprazole while on treatment that would be best to avoid interfering with the absorption of the Ledipasvir component of Harvoni. I just took OTC antacids like Tums well away from my Harvoni dose.

Here is the prescribing information sheet for Harvoni see table 4 page 9
