Daklinza, Solvaldi and Dietary Supplements
« on: April 23, 2016, 12:29:20 pm »
Hello,

My girlfriend has just started on a 12 week cause of Daklinza (60mg) and Solvaldi (400mg). She has had HCV for over 30 years, but her liver is still in very good shape.

However, she takes a number of dietary supplements daily that she is hoping not to have to stop. She asked various medical professionals and has had conflicting advise. We have also both tried Goolging but without any real success.

Does anyone here know if any or all of these are safe or not safe to take while on treatment?

MSM
Shark cartilage
Glucosamine
Fish oil
Cranberry
Milk thistle
Kelp
Chromium Picolinate
Lysine
Taurine
L-Methionine
Choline bitartrate
Inositol
Guarana
Ginseng

I am not a proponent of taking supplements during treatment - too many things competing for the liver's drug metabolism pathways. However, none of those listed are likely to hurt her, other than her budget. Will they interfere with her outcome? ? Who knows? Best to run them by a pharmacist and a drug interaction checker http://www.drugs.com/drug_interactions.html

Hi Miwa,

I'm in agreement with lporterrn about not taking most supplements during treatment as some can actually reduce the effectiveness of these medications.

The example that immediately springs to mind from your girlfriend's list is Taurine which is an inducer of the CYP3a4 enzyme. This means it will increase the effects of that enzyme which will cause the Daclatasvir to be metabolised and removed from her body too quickly reducing its effectiveness.

http://fixhepc.com/forum/experts-corner/714-taurine-daclatasvir-and-treatment-failure.html#10953

So Taurine supplements and energy drinks containing it should not be taken during treatment with Daclatasvir.

There are possibly others on the list that are the same but haven't been investigated yet so while they may have assisted in protecting her liver previously the safest course is to avoid all these sort of supplements for the relatively short period of treatment. She can consider using them again after treatment if she still feels she needs them.
