Keeping your chin up with cirrhosis.
« on: September 04, 2018, 02:55:40 pm »
With 3 years free from HCV under the belt, I feel like a thief who has stolen time from the grim reaper in some ways. I did not expect miracles to happen with treatment and cure because having compensated cirrhosis does reduce the efficiency of ones metabolism in general.

I do feel that I have been gifted the ability to do things that otherwise I may never have accomplished without a successful DAA treatment. But all things considered the devils bargain of having HCV leading to cirrhosis has taken its pound of flesh. My recovery rate when doing serious exercise is still down to the point that I can no longer hike difficult terrain without the risk of serious injury. I develop weakness that is slow to recover in my major muscles after serious exercise for more than an hour or two of work.
This tells me that the portion of what is left of my liver still metabolizing energy is not adequate for the job. However this certainly also means that stopping doing things will only make the situation worse.

Here is to all of us with cirrhosis who must now reduce our physical expectations accordingly. And in doing so adjust to the reality of having cirrhosis in a way that helps us remain as active and useful as is possible.

My wife and I just hiked out to see a petroglyph of what looks like a seal on the coastal rocks here on Vancouver Isle. The hike was close the limit of my ability and lower leg strength and I am back using a cane to make sure I don't take a serious tumble when hiking trails and climbing over rocks and the like.
My goal is to put off needing more assistance as long as I can and perhaps wading and fishing a little bit of river again this year if I get the chance. I am dropping excess baggage and maintaining upper body strength, so I am certainly not about to throw in the towel just yet!
Lynn;

this is exactly why I have posted this thread. I feel we all need to encourage each other all we can to do what we are capable of doing post treatment; this is as important for all of us as being cured of HCV.
