has anyone been able to post an avatar from a url address?
« on: August 22, 2015, 05:09:31 pm »
other than use the forum library?

If so , any suggestions?

I am using tinypic.com as my url host.

here is the url address I am trying to use:
http://i57.tinypic.com/1zd6w6u.jpg

works when I paste it into my browser window;

Keeps saying it is not an avatar or too large.  But  I have exported in as small a file as I can... cropped it too.

I have been told the maximum allowable file size here for avatars is 120x120 pixels. Perhaps the one you are trying to get this site to grab from URL is larger than that?

drummerman, I used tinypic.com, too, and the URL it gave me has the same syntax as yours. After seeing the avatars here, I had sized mine to 100x100 pixels. It worked, so it sounds like Kim has your answer.  -Gnatty

Scoutdoy, the general steps are in this post: http://forums.hepmag.com/index.php?topic=3202.0

If you don't want one of the avatars from the forum gallery because there's a photo on your iPhone you would like to use as your avatar, you will be going the URL route. As drummerman discovered, your photo has to be small in order to work. My avatar is 100x100 pixels, and Kim has been told that the maximum size is 120x120 pixels. If your photo is larger than that, either get your kids to help you crop and/or downsize the photo (you'll be able to choose square or horizontal or vertical rectangle -- whatever looks best) or let tinypic.com do it (which will result in a specific rectangle shape).

Go to tinypic.com and click on the Choose File button, then show TinyPic where on your iPhone the photo is located. NOTE: I have only done this using a desktop computer -- I don't own an iPhone, so I don't know if TinyPic works directly with an iPhone. If your photo is larger than 120x120 pixels, use the Resize: pull-down box to choose Avatar (100x75). Click on UPLOAD NOW! to obtain the URL you will need to paste into your Forum Profile. NOTE: TinyPic will make your photo available to any Internet user who wants it -- that's the price you pay for the free service.

Thank you gnatcatcher for the information. Will try on my next day off since nothing seems to be simple for me to do on this phone. Probably because I am old and can't seem to train my brain as quickly as even a 7 yr old on electronics

Scout, I have now posted clearer, step-by-step instructions in the Off Topic Forum under the title "TURN A PICTURE ON YOUR COMPUTER INTO YOUR AVATAR."  The direct link is http://forums.hepmag.com/index.php?topic=3234.0

Those instructions definitely work using a computer. Lynn K. followed them to turn her portrait into her new avatar. Whether the instructions can be done on an iPhone I have no way to test.

Kim, you were right about the maximum size being 120x120 pixels. (I have now enlarged my Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher avatar to that size.) 121x121 pixels was already enough over the limit to trigger the following error message: "The avatar you have selected is either too large or not an avatar."
