Prayers for a great result on my ultrasound
« on: June 07, 2016, 06:13:37 am »
I had an ultrasound in April of 2015. It was all normal. My bloodwork proved otherwise and I was diagnosed with F-4 Cirrhosis. I asked them to do an AFP test on me just in case and it was a little elevated. 40 something but they want to do another ultrasound tomorrow. Please pray that it shows nothing :-) Not really worried which is very rare for me. I know I've kicked this and have been spared of anything else.
Thank you in advance.

If it helps I have read they are more looking for big changes in AFP and numbers in the hundreds.

I assume that like me you will have abdominal ultrasounds and AFP testing every 6 months for the foreseeable future in not for the rest of our lives because of our cirrhosis.

Have you had any cirrhosis symptoms like edema or ascities? Have you had upper endoscopes to check for varicies?

Anyway good luck I am sure you will be fine

I was running at an F-2 for the past 10 years. A lot of personal loss came starting 2012 and still here. Not sure if stress causes it to get worse but in April when they found F-4, I had no symptoms other than my platelets being 75,000. In December when I did a recheck, my albumin levels were low 3.0, Bilirubin was 1.9 and platelets tanked down to 47,000.Felt foggy but no edema. Just what looked to be a constant bruise on my right foot below 2nd-3rd toes. I started getting edema in the feet and ankles after starting treatment. It goes up the calf as well. NoAscities and they have never done and endoscopy. We only have had Fibrosures and that one said F-4 but with bloodwork, it was probably right. I have a little less than 4 weeks left of my 6 month treatment. I cleared the virus at 4 weeks. I have noticed that my edema is dissipating now. My feet (size 10) look long and lean again but you can't press on the left foot. It moves and feels like someone inserted gel into it. It's just puffy and really gross feeling lol. I have lots of pain and tight calves still but I feel like I have improved already. That's a good thing :-)
I have a friend on one of the facebook boards and she had a transplant last year. Talked to her about it and she said her AFP ran around 300 before transplant and she didn't have cancer so that gave me hope.
I do know now from research that the AFP can also just go up because of the virus itself, also goes up with Cirrhosis, and (this was interesting) it goes up if your liver is recovering. Kind of broad so I am taking it with a grain of strand but hard to wait for results as usual.
Thanks for the prayers and well wishes. Hope to know in a few days or by Monday. Just keeping busy and keeping positive.
Irene

Another revelation my Mayo Dr. told me @ the 24 week testing was that the fibroscan score I had @ start of tx. was possibly scewed due to inflammation. I thought it would take more than a few years to heal the damage. With a F0  24 wk. score it was apparently the severe inflammation causing it to look worse. That was an amazing visit!

Hey I have edema also I had mild ascities which is visualized on ultrasound so if you have ascities they would note in on your ultrasound report.

Have you mentioned the edema to your doctor? I have been taking spironolactone (a diuretic) since summer 2008 still have some edema but not as bad as when I try to get off the meds. You might want to ask your doctor about adding a diuretic more comfortable feet and lower legs that way.

Good luck
