Tumor markers for HCC
« on: May 29, 2017, 11:37:01 pm »
Hello and Happy Memorial Day to all!

Seems I'm one of the 15-20% of patients who do not produce significant amounts of AFP in the presence of HCC.  So, I've asked my doctor to add Serum AFP-L3 and DCP, along with AFT to my 24 week post tx labs coming up this week.

I requested the added tests based on a couple of NCBI articles I read.  Hopefully my doctor is in agreement and orders the tests.  Wouldn't it be great if we didn't have to think about this stuff?

Best,
Pete

I have also read that an abnormal activation of the AFP gene is suspected to occur in those who are more prone to developing HCC. Perhaps this also means that some day soon those of us with an increased risk level for developing HCC will be able to take accurate tests to determine their risk factors.
.........
(edit: I changed to correct AFT to AFP gene, This gene encodes alpha-fetoprotein, a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac and the liver during fetal life. Poorly moderated activation of it in adults is suspected to indicate liver disease(s) including HCC. )
.......

It is becoming quite difficult for doctors to keep up to speed on diagnostics. One very interesting computerized diagnostic aid is what is being done with Watson. https://www.top500.org/news/watson-proving-better-than-doctors-in-diagnosing-cancer/

It is starting to look like AI in the very near future might be the best answer for many of us.

I commend you for all the leg work you are doing on HCC! I am certain that you are breaking new ground that unfortunately some of us will inevitably need to tread.

Keep us in the loop and all the very best, indeed for all of us dealing with the aftermath and horrors of HCV.

Pretty amazing article Eric, thanks for sharing.  Now if we could just get enough Watson's deployed, perhaps health care costs would become affordable some day.  Nah, what was I thinkin'?
