Hi all going to start Harvoni soon and want to know if it is okay to be taking sam-e with it.  Any thoughts would be great.   Thanks so much

Hi rock,

You should ask your Dr.! He will be the best source..
in my opinion I would not take it... Since, I  started 8 weeks ago I haven't taken nothing minus 1 Tylenol, I'm on week 8,  undetected at week 4....

I wouldn't...Harvoni does interact with a number of substances, and most of the supplements are yet to be clinically evaluated. Since SAMe may interfere with the way the body processes certain drugs using the liver's cytochrome P450 enzyme system, that was enough info for me to not use it. I stopped most supplements when I was on treatment.

Thanks, just hoping to avoid any added depression that harvonii may trigger. Maybe it won't trigger, perhaps ribavirin is the one that does?

Anxiety tends to be a bigger issue than depression. One thing to think about, if you do take SAMe, space it at least 4 hours from your Harvoni dose.

thanks again for that.  I have only been on sam-e for three weeks, I will go off of it slowly and hope for the best.  If I decide to go back on I will space it like you mentioned.

Hi rockee,

I stopped just about all my supplements even though they were approved by my doctor (including milk thistle which I had been on for 17 years) except for calcium/magnesium and SAM-e because I was concerned about insomnia and depression. I had read that SAMe actually increased the response to interferon treatments. (http://www.gastrojournal.org/article/S0016-5085(10)01326-0/abstract) Of course Harvoni and interferon treatments are based on completely different mechanisms, but it seems logical that SAMe could support my body's natural interferon in a similar way.

My 8-week treatment was completed on 4/29/15. The 4 week labs into treatment were VL < 15 detected which is considered successful response. (In fact, the nurse delivering the results over the phone said it was "not detected".)

I have gotten depressed a few times during treatment. I believe it would have been much worse if I hadn't taken SAMe. I didn't intentionally think about the 4 hour spacing -- Thanks Lucinda! -- but I did space them out taking Harvoni at 5:30 PM and SAMe around 11:00 PM.

Hope this helps!

The Cal/Mag I take is also Citrate. Thanks, rocke for the advice on Calcium :)  I just ran out and haven't replaced it yet. I think I have some straight Mag Citrate somewhere...

How about a Vitamin B Complex?

I take B-Complex occasionally for a little energy boost. Ideally, the dosage of each B vitamin should be balanced, not all the same, like the 50 mg or 100 mg formulas. (Even though I know better, what's in my cabinet is an across-the-board 100 mg formula.) I look for the B-12 to be methylcobalamin instead of the commonly found (and cheaper) cyanocobalamin.

This advice on cyanocobalamin versus methylcobalamin isn't a scholarly article, but at least the author is a doctor: http://www.dadamo.com/B2blogs/blogs/index.php/2004/02/07/cyanocobalamin-versus-methylcobalamin?blog=27

There also a connection between methylcobalamin and SAMe.

Effect of cobalamin derivatives on in vitro enzymatic DNA methylation: methylcobalamin can act as a methyl donor http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1868079

Hope this helps!
