Vitamin D defeciency
« on: June 03, 2016, 08:24:53 pm »
As some of you know i have a vitamin D deficiency and have started on rx vit D supplements.

Seems to be working as I don't have as much muscle tiredness, doc wants to recheck vitamin D levels at end of July.

I highly recommend that you get your levels checked.  Also, this is a great, eye opening video.  Apparently this is a problem in many countries.
http://www.ucsd.tv/search-details.aspx?showID=29085

Also, I keep seeing many , many people on the internet with vitamin D deficiencies AND high WBC (which I also have)  but I can't find any studies or correlations between the two.... except for one article that suggests it is due to thyroid problems.

weird.

 Hey DM,

Pluggin' for Ya big guy! Right there behind You. My re-check is in September. Strange how all of these anamolies keep popping up. But ,onward through the fog. Don't remember the WBC numbers on My latest Labs , but will check My file anyway.
Not only was I Vit D deficient ( low end 30 & I was 17 ) , but had low Vit B levels as well. Need to check more into MINERAL levels also.

Good luck and good to hear from You.

I swear by Vitamin D supplements. I was checked a few years ago and had low levels, and since taking supplements (D3 because it's the easiest to metabolize) I've had regular levels. I had it explained to me that Vitamin D is used up super quickly when the body has an infection, like a cold or wound or, yes, Hep C. With this chronic infection, our Vitamin D stores are being tapped into all the time and I think we're more likely to have low levels. This is completely speculation, and I don't really have the science to back it up, but it makes sense to me!

[Randon Vit D info just for fun] I've also been told that when we have low levels of Vitamin D we're more likely to get sunburned, because the body is actively trying to suck up Vit D when we're exposed to the sun. With higher internal levels, our body stops trying to suck up every bit of sunlight and it's harder to get sunburned.

I too am taking vitamin D supplements. My level 5 weeks post-treatment was 104 nmol/L (reference range: 75-150). So I wasn't subnormal, but I would like it higher.

I have read that Vitamin D is best taken with a meal, and ideally a fatty meal for best absorption. So that's what I've been aiming for. I am taking liquid D3 from a dropper.

I also read that those hit hardest by ribavirin anemia were also low in Vitamin D. That's why I decided to have my Vit. D checked in the first place.

I have not had it rechecked in the intervening months. Would be interesting to see if supplements have raised it. The test costs me $60.

Hi all,

Below is a link to an interesting study regarding Vitamin D levels. It does seem to show correlation between HCV infection and low levels. They also found improved SVR rates for those with good (>30ng/mL or 75nmol/L) vitamin D levels at least when treating with interferon.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3793147/

But please keep in mind that excessive levels of vitamin D can cause problems so you should only consider supplements based on testing and medical advice.

True that ... but they both do a good job...D2 is absorbed more easily and the D3 you have to take everyday.  I'm going to finish my D2 and then go D3, bottle is here and ready to go.   Course the best vitamin D source is the sun.... but it has been cloudy here for months.  Finally got a few days of sunshine.

Thanks for finding this study.  Makes perfect sense  , I knew there had to be a correlation.

Watch the presentation.   Its practically impossible to achieve toxic levels of Vitamin D.

Even sunlight is not an adequate source of vitamin D for many people. The human body evolved to be outdoors all day long; most of us are lucky to catch even an hour of direct sunlight on an average day. And people who live in northern climates often have a  very hard time keeping the D levels up for much of the year. I take D3 all year round, no matter how much outdoor time I'm getting.
