Welcome to my Coming Out Party
and Book!

:D  :D  :D

For anyone who has been wondering who the heck is @KimInTheForest… My full name is Kim Goldberg. And I am a freelance writer, poet and author in Nanaimo, BC, on Vancouver Island. I had Hepatitis C for about 45 years before being cured in 2015. I was lucky enough to land a seat in a clinical trial of Harvoni/ribavirin at the LAIR Centre in Vancouver, BC.

I blog about my Hep C story here:
https://pigsquash.wordpress.com/2016/01/28/undetectable-my-hep-c-story/

I have supported myself as a writer for nearly 40 years, winning awards for my investigative journalism, poetry and spoken-word performances. In that time, I have authored seven books of nonfiction and poetry, as well as science fiction stories, essays, and a couple thousand articles for newspapers and magazines.

I spent my 12 weeks of treatment writing a book about my Hep C journey. I hope to use my new book, Undetectable, to raise public awareness about Hepatitis C and the politics of withholding the cure from so many who need it. The book is dedicated to all who are still waiting.

Not trying to sell books here. Just wanted to offer another example of how each of us can find a way to use our Hep C story to raise awareness and erase stigma.

I wrote Undetectable in a Japanese literary style called haibun, which is a travel diary paired with haiku. Matsuo Basho, Japan’s most famous and revered poet, launched haibun in the 17th century with his Narrow Road to the Interior and other travel diaries of his foot journeys. Basho made the journeys in the final decade of his life, often in failing health, after he had lost or given away what little he owned. I could relate!

After just one week of treatment, I was saying “Hello, brain! Long time no see!” That’s how quickly these new drugs work. After my first seven days of treatment, my viral load had dropped from four million to 130. After four weeks, I was undetected. I have remained undetected ever since.

I would encourage everyone affected by Hepatitis C to find a way to speak up and speak out when the time is right for you. Some of you are way ahead of me on that! :)

The more that Hepatitis C is openly discussed, the sooner the stigma and misconceptions will fade, and the sooner everyone will get tested, treated and cured.

Wellness to all,
Kim Goldberg

(My book cover really depicts the way I now feel as I embrace my NEW LIFE, free of HCV. So I wanted to share it to inspire others. But if it is deemed too promotional, my feelings won't be hurt if moderators find it necessary to remove it. Peace out. :) )

Having just having received a nice Clairefontaine "Back to Basics 1951" notebook and two bottles of ink in the mail this week, I am inspired today by your post. Whether I had (subconsciously) planned to keep a journal of my treatment or my purchase of these writing supplies at this juncture is sheer coincidence, it certainly is timely. I will be starting treatment very soon - I've just had my first appointment with my new doctor today.

Funny thing is that I'm no writer (mainly what I do is jot down things). I just simply enjoy everything to do with fountain pens. I'm already keeping another journal recording my progress with diabetes (which is not interesting reading, by the way  :o), so I figured, "Why not?" Why not record whatever comes to me with respect to my eradication of this evil thing inside me? This monster which has caused me so much misery for so many years?

So, interesting reading or not - I'm doing this! Thanks for the very nice nudge.

Best,
Jon

Hi Flaco,
The handwritten account of treatment is such a good idea!
I am big Clairefontaine fan. I also love Herbin, Visconti and Noodlers ink. I think Herbin is my fave but I prefer the waterproof colours. Which pens do you like? I am a straight up Lamy writer. I am awaiting the release of this year's special colour Al-Star. I do have enough, but I buy them for presents now.
Best wishes,

Thanks for the inspiration, Kim. I've bookmarked your blog, and btw love the "Uninstalling Hepatitis" graphic. :D

Hi, Hazel. Geez, I don't even know how many pens I have. At present I'm using my all-sterling Grifos pen I got off of eBay. Also among my faves are my Waterman 52, some pens I made, and I've been meaning to ink up my old yellow Safari that has black metal parts. I guess you're awaiting the neon green Lamy.

For inks I mostly use Pelikan 4001 Konigsblau and the R&K iron gall ones - Salix and Scabiosa.

Oops now I've gotten on a roll; I'd better return this thread to its rightful owner and subject matter.  ;)

Best to both of y'all,
Jon

It's a wonderful day that we can be reading such success! I am so grateful that research has finally come to this point........ so many of us have been waiting for safer, more effective drugs to kill this virus and it's so good to be reading about all the success stories.  Thanks for your contribution and I, too, have been thinking about how I can help others when I have a normal energy level again.  I do believe this will be my year for success, too.  FT

Congratulations on the book and the cure Kim,and I hope the book reaches as many people as possible.I think every one of us that has lived with Hep C and been cured have become activists in our own way.I've never been shy about the fact that I have/had it or about the journey to get rid of it.I'm always willing to impart a bit of knowledge about both the disease and the cure to anyone that will listen and I always will.Anyway congratulations again.Cheers

Kim,  throughout my efforts to get Harvoni & then finally taking the journey ...you were always there .  Inspiring with the right words to calm the torrent of emotions & struggle that this tight group was experiencing. It's hard to put in words so you can imagine my joy that you have done it for us! I will be honored to read & keep your book close to my heart. Congrats for this great effort.

Thank you all so much for your supportive words as I usher my new book into the world and 'out' myself.  :D :D :D

So far that has all gone better than anticipated (even though my book and self-outing are only 1 week old). I have not been peppered with inappropriate or ignorant questions or remarks by the world at large. And I have outed myself pretty widely at this point on Facebook, where I have about 2,000 friends, and on twitter where I have 6,000 followers. I have had nothing but supportive feedback and comments there (except for one which I deleted from my timeline).

Anyone who wants to friend me on Facebook (or just look at my timeline) can do so here:
https://www.facebook.com/kim.goldberg.71

I will be launching my new book with a talk and reading in Nanaimo on Feb 27, and in Ladysmith, BC, in May. I am working with the organization HepC-BC to arrange a Victoria book launch that will be part of a larger Hep C event including a screening of the film "Deal With It."

I gave an hour-long interview to Boil The Frog Slowly Radio in Ohio 2 days ago. That will air on Feb 20 (I think). I will post the link to the podcast once it is available so you can all critique me. Haha! ;) And I have 2 Nanaimo radio interviews happening later this month, plus some other media stuff.

Many of you have expressed eagerness to read my new book. That's great! I love you all and would give you all free copies, if I could. But I went into debt to publish this book, and am paying off that loan with interest. All I can say without violating forum rules about no commercial advertising is that I fill orders as they come in, and I ship anywhere in the world, and I give free shipping anywhere in North America. I do not sell my books through Amazon or bookstores or as eBooks. I sell them in person (at talks, readings, festivals, events, etc.) and directly off my website (Pig Squash Press).

I have not posted the link for ordering because I really respect this forum and its rule about no commercial links to sell products. But for those of you interested in my book, if you can find your way to my Pig Squash Press website (shown in my sig below), you will find the "Books & Ordering" tab up top. (Or you can message me here.)

Peace out & big love to all,
kim

Thanks, Else. I resist corporate entanglement as much as possible in my life. I believe in authentic connection with other beings on this planet, not algorithm-driven faux connection governed by a cyber monopoly. I support "maker" culture, self-reliance, small is beautiful and everything D-I-Y. The dominant culture has left us so detached - from the planet, from our food sources, from each other, from ourselves. Doing my best to kick the dominant culture in the arse from my little corner of Vancouver Island... ;)

Hi,
I just saw that HEP posted info about Kim's book. https://www.hepmag.com/article/poet-kim-goldberg-pens-book-hepatitis-c-journey

I am set to review it on my blog, probably Monday. Preview: I LOVE this book. Really, really love it. I am not saying this because she is a forum member. This is an achingly beautiful book.

Rosie - yes the poetry was tight and evocative. I am writing reviews for 2 other publications and I will be mentioning that too. I wrote so many notes about things that blew me away, but I didn't want to spoil it for anyone else. I loved the part about preparing for treatment. It was so me, but my version played out differently. And then page 100 - an entire memoir on one page

Page 100 gave me chills. I don't want to ruin it for others either so we will just have to wait till more have experienced the book for the feedback to come flowing in . I think I had posted in my early forum experience that having hepc intervention was hard for me to accept as I had always mistrusted Doctors & pills to cover up the syptoms & not solve problems. This was my first experience taking a miracle pill that cured the problem so I definitely needed to adjust my paradym ...in a big way!

My book launch is now behind me. It went well, and there were LOTS of audience questions, which really pleased me. People want to know about Hepatitis C. In fact, they seemed starved for information.

A few photos are here:
https://pigsquash.wordpress.com/2016/02/27/undetectable-nanaimo-launch-photos/

I have more talks/readings coming up in Vancouver, Victoria, Gabriola Island and Ladysmith from March through May. Am working with a BC non-profit, HepCBC, to line up public education nights in Vancouver and Victoria, where the film "Deal With It" will be shown, and I'll read/speak.

I would love to do a reading from this book, accompanied by classical flute. It could be a performance by KimintheForest + ForestDweller. Seems very appropriate! :)

Good luck on your labwork.

Forest dweller, maybe you can borrow the flute's Japanese relative, the shakuhachi, for the performance? That would go really well with Kim's haibun.

Yes, good luck on your lab work. I expect you'll be thrilled!

My book Undetectable just received a great review in the Vancouver Sun by poet Mary Ann Moore:

http://vancouversun.com/entertainment/books/review-undetectable

Let's hope it does some good in terms of raising public awareness about Hep C and erasing stigma! The review can be read online now and will appear in the print edition of the Saturday Sun - just in time for Hepatitis C Awareness Month!

Hi Morab. I give free shipping in North America. So no, you don't need to send more money than the price of the book. And congrats on being at day 23! :)
