Brain fog
« on: January 15, 2015, 02:31:54 am »
I'm getting very forgetful these days. I'm 6 weeks in to my Harvoni treatment. I remember things and then forget them again instantly. Trying to write stuff down but everyday is a struggle to remember what to write down. I am self employed and used to juggling many things at once and now I'm really f-ing up left and right.

Anyway, I guess there's nothing to be done but continue treatment and hope my brain functions better when I'm done. But any tips or remedies are appreciated. I'm sleeping fairly well, meditating and trying to not put too much on my plate. It's difficult though, things are kicking in to gear full on in my work and I have only told one friend that I work with what I'm going through.

Nicole, Try and remember that your body is busy fighting the good fight. Keep doing as best you can, that's all we can ask of ourselves.

You could try one of those digital pocket recorders or an app on your phone to do short notes.

Just a thought and a little easier than stopping to write.

Good luck,

Hi Nicole,

I went through that myself and it was bad for about 2-3 weeks and then it starts getting better on a daily basis. I just made sure I wrote down anything important. I couldn't even remember how to spell easy words and I am a great speller, a word as easy as wear wouldn't come out. Then the phase when I couldn't even find the words in my head, they just went poof!

It was awful but it is way, way better now.

Hang in there, write yourself lots of notes and use google when you forget words :)

Nicole,

For me it got better around 10 weeks but I am on a much longer course of treatment than you are. Hopefully the fog will start clearing for you soon.

Hi, Nicole. I've had terrible "brain fog" on and off during the whole 12 weeks on Viekira and ribavirin. I hope it gets better as I "de-tox" over the next 3 months. Like you, I work at my own business. I usually work alone but I occasionally take on group projects. I had to say "Not at this time." to a couple of people. One thing I found is that when I took a leap of faith and actually told people (family and people I know well) what was going on with me, they were surprisingly understanding and supportive to the best of their ability! I told very few people when I was first diagnosed and trying to find treatment, by the way. That was a good idea because too many of my friends love to give their own opinions on treatments for all manner of conditions. lol. Too much information or misinformation. So, "onward through the fog!" Don't worry too much about it. Most people will not notice anyway.

Thanks for the great advice and words of encouragement everybody.

Red Hen, part of me doesn't tell people because of the stigma but the other part is when I have to pretend I'm ok and just grin and bear it, the stronger I am and I just keep going. I find myself letting down my guard with those that know and more likely to take a nap or something. It helps me stay tough and motivated the less people that know. My work is my savior right now.

Hi Mel,

Was your brain fog better before Harvoni, then got worse on Tx?
How is it now compared to pre Tx?
I have BF too but I assumed it was leftover Mercury in my brain but maybe it's got more to do with my liver function. Chelating Mercury for 4-5 years with ALA certainly improved my BF but I still have some.

Joe,

My brain fog got really bad while I was on S/O but then after about 2 weeks on Harvoni it started to clear. So it was bad from week 6-10 for me. I was sick before treatment but nothing like the loss of words and things like that, those were all during treatment.

Maybe as your virus died off, it released mercury into your body chemistry. I don't know this but I'll bet it's possible. Mercury sure is known to cause brain fog.
I think virii and bacteria both have the ability to hold onto Mercury.
When my Tx is over I plan to resume chelating with ALA and DMPS to mop up any remaining Mercury. I'll probably always chelate to some extent. In this toxic world we live in, it's never a good idea to let things accumulate.

Nicole, I am a huge reader, therefore should be a great speller (not) and somedays my brain fog is so bad I have to think about how to spell my name, I also have some days where my word search is out of wack, then other days i'm right in the game, soo weird.
I am hoping that this will even out one way or another lol, some days at work at so crazy busy I don't have time to not know how to spell my name.

Hi,

I follow the Andrew Cutler PhD method of safe chelation. We use low doses of various chelators like ALA, DMSA and DMPS. For instance I worked up to 12.5 mg of ALA every 3 hours in the day, and 4 hours at night, for 3 days a week.

I had all my 18 mercury fillings replaced with non metal ones in 1986 but chelation I began about 5 years ago. I'm mostly done but will resume after EOT. It took breaks in the 5 years, a year at time. I resumed last fall, up until just before Harvoni. I took 3 days on and 4 days off every week. You have to begin slowly. ALA is good for the liver they say.

Man it's awful. I put things in my calender and even set alarms from the calender to remind me. But if I don't see the phone when they go off (2 hours and 1 hour before) and I forget to check the calender, I forget about the appointment. I don't have a good system for this. I've never been so spacey in all my life. :(

for me the brain fog is getting worse as I go along with Harvoni!!!! I'm forgetting things as I think of them. I'm on week 9 with 21 pills to take. I myself don't care what anyone says Harvoni has many side affects. I've been up since about 2am this morning can't think so I'm on here trying to read and talk about what is going on with me and Harvoni. I feel I'm getting sick BUT like I've told everyone " I will make it or die trying" as I'm not a quitter. My work is pretty flexable and pretty much where I talk about everything. I ride with a life long friend and we discuss our problems with each other. I really don't think he understands but he listens and that helps. All my levels are down I'm Undetectable and I feel like shit. I'm bailing and taking my meds. yay 20 pills left after I go take this one

Mike your not alone in your feelings. I go into these phases where I think I can't take another minute of this, like I'm coming out of my own skin. I'm afraid I'll never get my brain to work right again. Right now I'm on my fifth day of rash/hives all over my body from the waist up. It brings back memories of Interferon and is totally freaking me out. Yes there are side effects from Harvoni. I'll push on if you will, come on it's not that much further to go.

Oh I will make it!!! I have 18 days left of Tx. Then on to post. I just don't want people to go into this and tink there are no problems. It's a bad virus that most of us have had for a long time. The only way I used to feel normal was after 3 or 4 beers. I guess get a little buzz and feel the fog had cleared. Really it was covered. Haven't had a beer in months.

Mike, I miss my "normal", drinking vodka mixed with anything! I got my HepC from a transfusion in 1971. I didn't even drink in those days, there were other ways to experience getting "normal" ha-ha. I've got 13 more days until the end of 12 wks.
I hope this stuff clears out of our systems fast. Rash is better today. Mood so-so, don't think I'll clobber anyone today. Hang in there-
