"brain fog" & lethargy
« on: January 28, 2015, 11:47:52 am »
Over 10 years ago I was always tired and seemed that my cognitive skills were reduced.  This was so apparent to me I went to the doctor, and found I had HCV.

Have been waiting for a cure and am now considering treatment.

So I'm wondering if I am successfully treated should I expect an improvement it these areas?

Extent of recovery is an individual thing and a lot depends on how much damage you liver has suffered.

However many have reported feeling like they were 20 years younger. Hep C symptoms develop slowly over time and are hard to tell the difference from normal aging until you take away the hep c and find out how it had been affecting your quality of life.

Have you had your fibrosis evaluated either by fibroscan or liver biopsy? Are you platelet levels, bilirubin, & creatinine in normal range?

I would do more than consider treatment I would be asking my doctor to get me signed up.

The odds are very good you will be cured and yes I would expect you would have improvements if the symptoms are due to hep c.

Best of luck to you

Thanks for the reply and I did have a biopsy about 10 years ago that was F0 and my liver function blood test have always been in normal levels.  Twice I've had a quantitative which showed <2M.  BTW 1a

Hi Charles,

Significant liver damage can impair cognitive functioning due to impurities and toxins not being filtered out of the blood, which can build up. An improvement in liver function can assuage this.

Chronic fatigue (a well documented side effect of HCV) can also impair cognitive functioning regardless of liver damage.

Once the virus is cleared, the fatigue subsides and the liver can begin to rejuvenate. It is because of this, many report a cognitive jump.

I noticed a significant improvement once I cleared the virus. Simply put, the Hep-C fog lifted and I have better clarity of thought.

It just seems like I'm sharper, more verbal - quicker on my feet. I got my Chess Game back - fianchetto!

Best wishes, Mike

Hey Charles,  I am awaiting Harvoni myself.  I have also lost ambition, drive in business, tired etc.  I am also praying I get approved and I am again clear, active and aggressive in business.  Mike, It was encouraging to hear you feel much sharper...That's what I am hoping as well.

I had hep c for almost 19 years, and experienced increasing lethargy and brain fog. I am happy to say that after 3 months of Harvoni, the virus is gone and the lethargy and brain fog are considerably better. My liver hasn't finished repairing itself yet, and I still have some of those symptoms, but it's nothing like what it was. Go for it! Also-you can be having damage to your liver even at under 2 million viral load, and ten years ago is a long time. The new test is not a biopsy, much less invasive. Get it-fibroscan.

Charles: re applying for the medication. I highly recommend going through a liver specialist if that's geographically possible, rather than a family doctor. They are better at negotiating insurance companies in this particular area in my experience.

Hi Charles

I have also read at least some insurers won't accept a prescription from a general practicioner must be either an infectious disease specialist, gastroenterologist or hepatologist.

Good luck

Waiting on results from FibroSure and GenoSure, along with enzyme results, now.
Nearest specialists is 150miles but there is one doc in area that has had experience with this.  My ROC is consulting with him.

I understand that Gilead has  help desk for doctors  to call.  And that is who insisted on the test I took.

Charles: Good for you! Stay on it! They must make some allowances for people who are geographically far from specialists. I forgot how lucky I was to be near Swedish Hospital Liver Center in Seattle. Best of luck to you. This stuff works.
