strange symptoms followed by a positive Hepc test
« on: March 16, 2015, 12:53:25 pm »
Allow me to preface the 'test' part by saying my son had been sharing needles off & on for two years (he's 20). He recently got clean but out of no where developed pain in his testicles followed by dull ache in groin, sometimes shooting pains down upper thigh...feels like he's been kicked in his testes & his lower parts want to drop out of his body.
Visits to the doctor and urologist (with cat scans) revealed nothing.
During this time, he went to an independent testing agency and it came back with a positive HepC result (the only disease he tested for). He has not shared this info with his doctor. He will.
I know what I described is not the typical HepC symptom, but could HepC or some other STD be doing this?

Was the test for the hep c antibody or for the hep c virus? Normally the doctor will test for the antibody 1st and if that is positive then they will go on to a test for the virus itself. It is possible to have antibodies but not be actively infected with hep c.

As to the remainder of your question we are not doctors here just people who read a lot about hep c because we have the virus. We are only familiar with hep c and liver issues and cannot begin to diagnose his symptoms nor can we as we are not doctors.

The best person to ask would be his doctor. So sorry your son is dealing with drug abuse issues I hope you and you son find the help he needs.

The antibody test only means they were exposed to hep c about 25% of people exposed never develop chronic hep c and so are negative for the virus. His next step is to be tested for the virus to determine if he is currently infected for hep c. He should probably also be tested for HIV and for hepatitis B.
