Any vitamins ok? Notice bruising
« on: April 07, 2015, 11:05:46 am »
Doc told me to stop all vitamins, minerals I understand, as they can bind to meds. But what about B vitamins that are water solvable and vit c? Anyone have answer? Seems like Doc unsure and nervous for us to take anything except ibuprophen or tylenol. Doesn't immune system get taxed? I finished week 3, noticed 3 big bruises on back of leg and sinuses bled. They have no answers. I did fly this week, am I becoming brittle? Dry skin and night sweats. Am drinking water, bottled, lacking minimal minerals? Labs ok. Any thoughts? Appreciate input  :)

Hey Phila! Was born there. Platelets ok per doc. Noticed bilirubin could be changed on med sheet info, maybe it's connected. All this water, makes me wonder if vitamin levels get washed out. Hope you're doing ok.

Despite my name, the only time I've had contact with Philadelphia was on a train from NYC to DC.

It's the name of one of my horses. :)

I've been taken B, D & E  vitamins since the first day of Tx. I did ask my doc, Pharmacist & Gilead about it. They said it was ok. My first two week test on 3/26/15 came back at Detected <15 down from 12043488. My four week test, last thursday, the 9th, came back Undetected. That's not to say it's right for you but I like to think it helped me.
Pre Tx (VL 12043488) ALT 52/ AST 39
Harvoni Start Date 03/12
2 Week in Tx Results HCV RNA Detected, less than 15 IU/mL. ALT 19 / AST 19
4 Weeks in Tx Results HCV RNA Not detected. ALT 21 / AST 18

Ya, my doc also said vitamins are fine. I take multi, a B, separate Vitamin C, Vit D and Magnesium citrate(I get muscle cramps if I don't)

Calcium was the only mineral he said was a no-no---the calcium gluconate that most supplements are made of, Tums also is made of this---have acid-neutralizing properties and therefore should be avoided.

So, although I was taking calcium citrate, he felt better that I stop it, since they know so little--yet.

I have made a point of taking all my vit's 8-ish or so hours after or before my Harvoni.....I take it at night now and take my vit's in the morning. Along with a few other script meds(Synthroid, diuretic)....

But, as always best to check with Gilead or your special care pharmacy...

Best!

Thumbs up from my doc for my multivitamin and D3.  I also take those chewy gummy bear looking things that are to increase fiber intake.

And congrats GLC2 on your superior VL test result.

Thanks Meg & Bituman

I've been in this position three times before. I've always responded to Tx. I'm holding on to my excitement for my first two week post Tx blood test. Which, the results will be in on June 15th. If that comes back negative, my party might be seen on CNN as a news story.

As for the vitamins, I would suggest anyone wanting to take them talk to their doc first and not go by what we post here. Everyone is different and what might be good for some, might not be right for others. Balanced meals would probably achieve the same result.

Ahh, yes...Hadn't thought of contacting CNN...;-)

I completely agree re: checking in with our providers. We can share ideas and suggestions here because indeed, our doctors don't always give us enough information from the get-go-----and because we are the first cohort on it since approval, there will be things we are experiencing that were not noted in the clinical trials, but checking in with them and or Gilead is the only way I would make changes to my regimen.

Rooting for you---to be the last treatment you'll ever need for life-time SVR....

Thank you for responses on vitamins. My Doc is walking on eggshells with this drug.  Need vit c and b to feel right. D3 is good for bones and antioxidant. Think minerals grab on to drug eg: calcium, magnesium, etc.  hoping 152 vl gone next week, 4th week draw.  Do we really have to do full 12 weeks after  multiple undetected. VL?

@espo...You're welcome...re: your doctor walking on eggshells about the Harvoni...what is his/her specialty?

Indeed, we have to go thru the prescribed regimen time...you can do a search on this website where it's discussed that only a fraction of the hepC in our body is contained in our blood. Most of it is in our livers and because this virus is so stubborn, wants to survive at any cost, if you will, it will sequester itself in our livers or any other organ. It takes longer for the medicine to saturate our organs and zap its proliferation.

Which is to say that even if we test negative in our blood, until it's fully eradicated, we will still have hepC virus in our livers...trial after trial, since they began them 20 years ago has shown that a patient has to be blood-hcv-negative for a certain amount of time before it's felt the virus is eradicated and hence, the patient cured...

During most of the interferon days, only at 6 months after end of treatment(EOT) blood viral load undetectable  is when they considered you cured. In recent years they dropped it to 3 months post treatment with an undetectable blood viral load in order to be considered cured....

Best and continue to take each pill...and lots of water...treatment does end in the blink of an eye. My last pill of a 12 week course is tomorrow.

I think it would be best if you did finish the 12 weeks. Some of us did years on Interferon & Riba. I did 3-1/2 years myself. 12 weeks of Harvoni is a close to a walk in the park as we can get. I'd go longer if it was prescribed. To be honest, if someone didn't finish the Tx and had extra, I'd probably do that to if I could get my hands on it. I hate this virus that bad. I hate the virus and the stigma that goes along with it. I've heard several negative comments from people that didn't know I have it. And a couple from people that did know. Yep! I'd finish it!

Meg

Tomorrow? That's Great!!!

They say three months after is when they can tell if you're cured or not. Everytime I treated previously and went Negative. The virus always showed after a couple weeks off Tx. If I show neg. on June 20th, which will be when my post EOT two week test will post online, I'll know I'm cured. That's what I want to believe anyway. To be honest, I'm not sure I could handle a 4th positive result after all I've been through, physically & financially, trying to get rid of this virus.

GLC, Ya, tomorrow. I was confused for a couple of days this week and kept thinking it was Monday but when I looked at my Harvoni daily pill container I saw that it was Sunday....

I can't wait. Going to lite a candle when I take my last pill!

It sounds like you've had a very rough ride over the years. 3 times(3.5 years) of interferon.  Ouch......

Harvoni acts so differently....it aims right in the important places the virus signals itself to replicate.  Whereas, interferon was going the indirect route...

Wishing you a smooth as possible journey and SVR.....
