Caffeine and Harvoni ?
« on: June 25, 2015, 12:11:10 pm »
I was reading in a thread where someone mentioned caffeine could interfere with Harvoni.  Does that mean no coffee? :-\

Full disclosure, I'm no Doctor but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn express.  ;D  Caffeine does not interfere with Harvoni. I drink 1-2 cups of coffee everyday, been on Harvoni for 8 weeks and was undetectable at the 4 week test.
I was told just not to take anything with Sofosbuvir and St. Johns Wart.

Stay well and Good Luck!

I am a huge proponent of caffeine, esp for liver disease. I've never seen any evidence of caffeine interacting with Harvoni

Thank you Lucinda! I know caffeine was supposed to be good for the liver however someone posted something that contraindicated that with Harvoni. This is my first "rodeo" with treatment and I so want to make sure that I don't inadvertently compromise anything.

And I also wanted to say another "Thank You" as it was through finding you on FB and reading up on you that led me here!!

Peace and blessings~Robin

I am touched by your words, thanks for taking the time to write them. Also, your question sent me right to the coffee, and I am toasting you with it as I write this. Good luck.

I think caffeine will increase the incidence of headaches while on Harvoni.
I drink two cups every morning and it hasn't affected me.

I also have read in some instances of caffeine causing headaches in association with Hep-C meds. I'm starting my med soon and the last thing my doc said was to drink some caffeine to give me energy if and when I start being anemic.

I suppose everyone is different.. I have type 2 so I'm going on ribivirin and solvaldi sp? Type 2 requires the ribavirin....just my luck.   :'(

Does anyone know what the main difference in type 1,2, etc?

Think Type 2 is easier to treat.

I disagree on Type 2 being easier to treat. 2 requires the ribavirin! AND ALL THOSE MEAN SIDE EFFECTS, HA! But, what do I know..... I won't be laughing soon... Start both Sunday.

Was told if I only had type 1, Sovaldi woul have done the trick......, ??????

As far as caffeine and headaches are concerned - caffeine can both alleviate  or aggravate a headache - the trick is to know which it does in your case. One thing I have heard consistently on the message boards is that drinking lots of water helps prevent Harvoni-headaches.

One of the side effects of Ribavirin and potentially the worst, Is anemia. Any known supplements besides eating lots of anti-oxidants such as bluberries etc.?
I've heard something about some kind of shot to improve the loss of red blood cells whic riba causes.

The shots have serious risks, so many doctors are reluctant to prescribe, especially since treatment durations are shorter and we aren't seeing the huge drops in hemoglobin like we used to with interferon plus longer term ribavirin.

B12 may help

Hi Lucinda,

I see that you are a global moderator/member and was wondering if you could give me some guidance on the forums.  There are so many and navigating them is very confusing.  It looks to me as if you can choose a thread and add to it, however, how does one start a thread?  I would like to start one.

Thank you if you can help and have a wonderful day.

Hi Be Free,
Pick a section, such as "On Hepatitis C Treatment" and near the top you will see "Start a Topic" - click on it and the rest will look familiar.

Good luck.

I am going into week 4 of harvoni today, and having a cup of joe as I type this. Next Saturday is my 4 week test, and look forward to the results to be great. From what I have read here, and elsewhere, coffee does not interfere with harvoni. I will post back my results ASAP. Thank you everyone for the input,as it gives me hope. The headaches are very minimal for me,no different from pre harvoni. The one thing I have noticed this week is,my night sweats have pretty much gone away!
