Nearing EOT - Finishing Strong and Staying Positive!
« on: September 18, 2015, 04:05:56 am »
Hi Yall ~ there are a number of us who will be completing treatment over this next month or in a few weeks or whenever. All are welcome here.

Some of us have had no or minimal side effects and others many more.  We have had different treatments.  I'm hoping you will join me in this thread to post the positive things we have done, are doing, and will do to finish our treatment strong, and with the most positive mindset we can create together!  I think it's a great set up for after treatment and allowing our bodies the best chance possible to heal itself.

I'll go first:  When I took my pill tonight, I thanked it.  Lately, I even kiss the bottle (makes me happy).  When I got the first bottle I put it on an art pedestal and took a photo of it.  I texted it to friends who walked with me (and listened ad naueum) through the 6 months process to get it.

I jumped on my rebounder (supposed to be good for flushing out the lymph system).

I texted my friend "#grateful again".  I met clients and made sure it was a pleasant experience for us all.  I ignored a rude clerk and decided it was more my perspective than her being rude.  All in all, a great day!

Hi, Bree -- Since I'm just 3 days behind you, I'll go second.

I can picture you kissing that bottle! As you know, I've pictured Harvoni, in the guise of a tiny bird called a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, catching and eating all those little HCV gnats.

Paying it forward through random acts of kindness is such a high, I'm like a kid in a candy store. I have to hide the euphoria in order to be present to those undergoing really tough times -- there are a lot of such people in my life at the moment, so I'm thankful Harvoni has given me the energy to be a listener for them.

Also, I read anything useful I can find. There's a wonderful new book by Kelly McGonigal, Ph.D., entitled The Upside of Stress: Why Stress is Good for You, and How to Get Good At It. It helped me understand why the hep forums are health-inducing -- most posts help convert what could be harmful fight-or-flight responses into healthy challenge and tend-and-befriend responses.

Thanks Gnatcatcher!  Yes, the euphoria is an awesome thing.  Comes and goes for me.  I love the tend and befriend concept.

I got a haircut and a massage today.  I have been treating myself to massages every few weeks these past couple of months.  Trying to flush it all out, stress release and nurture myself.

I've tend to read random chapters of books that speak to me.  Lately, I'm reading "Surprise" about looking for ways to surprise yourself instead of living in a rut and "The Achievement Habit" - sounds heady but there are great exercises and tips about mindset and "The Art of Tidying Up" (massive best seller, cool stuff, maybe I'll implement and it has already changed me.)

Loving on my two little dogs... all in all ~ It's a good day for a good day!

Two more weeks for Me Fellow Warriors. Not letting the everyday SNAFU's get Me down. Dealing with day to day struggles in a positive manner to keep stress down. Enjoying the posts here on the forums to keep spirits up. Trying to be patient with those around Me that still do not understand the everyday struggle and hardship that We all go through. Focusing on getting out of the hole and getting caught up despite the negativity involved.
Looking forward to the NEW NORMAL rather than the usual abnormal. Wishing and hoping all to be happy & healthy for the first time in most of our Adult lives! I refuse to become one of the down trodden & give up hope. If this Tx. don't work I will be looking for the next one.
ALL IS GOOD IN THE LAND OF SVR. I WILL OVERCOME. IT IS NOT A MATTER OF IF, BUT A MATTER OF WHEN GOD ALLOWS ME TO DO SO!!!! NO FEAR. I AM NOT SCARED AND I WILL EAT YOU IF I HAVE TO!!!!!

Hey Slats... I hear you!  It's funny how we kind of live in this other dimension... living with the "usual abnormal" as you say and rising above it.  It's either that or be a bummer. And, the positive attitude really helps a lot, no matter what they do.

As we say in Hawaii... If someone doesn't show you Aloha, show them Aloha anyway.

I have one week left on Harvoni... all in all, it's been pretty special.  I'm amazed I'm functioning as well as I am.  I've been so busy I couldn't even find time to post.  This week too... two of the busiest weeks while on treatment (lucky it was saved for last).

I try to keep doubts at bay and keep on believing... after all, the odds this time are definitely stacked in our favor!!!

Slats... get a massage if/when you can.  It really helps to relax that tension buildup.  I'm thinking (my personal, self-created theory) that massage, chiropractor, all that kind of stuff gets the blood circulating, thereby releasing any little critters that think they can hide so they can get zapped and deemed disabled.

Right before I began treatment, I had a discussion with the Hep C.  I told it it had to go now... that whatever reason/s it had been around for so long had been served and that we both know that it was time for it to go.  I think it heard me.  I really believe that.

I've wanted to do more and do my part to aid the medication to do it's thing... we do the best we can. I feel pretty good about it all so far.  My goal is to finish strong and believe in a favorable outcome.

Oh yea, the Hep Whisperer!!! LOL!! Yes You are correct. Chiropractic adjustment and therapeutic massage stimulate the body in many ways releasing all kind of nasties stored up in well hidden places, hence the directive from therapist to force h2o for 1-2 days after a vigorous massage. It is amazing what a five foot 100 lb.little women can put a 6' 3" 255 pound guy through in the course of thirty minutes to an hour. O.K. everybody!! Get you mind out of the gutter!!! We are talking therapeutic stuff here.LOL!!!!!

Yes, I love it... the Hep Whisperer!  That's me!  Wish I had made that my handle.
My cat is named Whisper because when he was a kitten when he meowed no sound came out.  I must say he gets his way.  Never under estimate a whisperer... they can be as powerful as a warrior, just a different strategy for the result.  Ha!

Another thing I've been dipping in to... lymph drainage.  I read up on it online... bought a rebounder and do a few other things to shake things up and keep it flowing...

Cal ~ Yep, very exciting.  The new normal.  The new me.  I think that will be my mantra.

So glad you will get a massage!  I feel a little punky the next day (like I do anyway after a massage)... but the next day after that... I feel great.  I know it gets things flowing and relieves that tension thingy that can go with treatment.

#grateful.  I'm getting new pv solar on my home... they just called to hook it up on Friday. I just visited with my neighbor (lived next door for 20+ years, never really talked). Just got a new referral for my business.  I just keep looking for the good stuff.  Trying to stay in the present and also keep looking forward!

Yay - 16 more days of Harvoni to go - AND got my first undetected result today (bloods drawn at end of week 8 - previous bloods drawn at week 3 were VL of 70).  Very exciting, even though I know that the big one is another 3 1/2  months away.  I will be glad to see what "me off Harvoni" is going to feel like - I have no idea of how to attribute how I feel physically to what anymore (meds, disease, diet, lack pf exercise, etc etc.).  Not that I feel bad at all, but it's hard to believe that Harvoni is killing off the virus with no symptoms, even subtle ones, at all.  I'm so grateful I was able to get this drug, and so angry that it isn't available to everyone who needs it.

TDK hat's awesome you are undetected!  It feels so good to see that on the test!  Yes, we will all wait for the Cure status, but darn, it feels good and amazing to see UND!  16 days will go quick... I'm down to 6 days!

I feel the same way... not sure what is age and just my body and liver status and what is effect of Harvoni.  I too am curious how I will feel afterward... I'm hopeful to feel even better than before this whole process started.

So grateful for all of us and hopeful for those waiting.  I feel like their day will come too...

Here's what I did today (after a great sleep aided by pharmaceuticals)....

I wrote a letter to the supervisor of my case worker at Gilead Support Path raving on how wonderful she is (very true) and how she went the extra mile to get me on treatment.  I also told her how grateful I am that I was able to be treated with these miracle drugs.

When I initially told my case worker I wanted to write a letter about her she said "not necessary, I was just doing my job".  Nope she did more. She spent 5 hours haggling with my insurance company (to no avail) and she got me approved through Support Path.  I know how lucky I am... and I am so grateful!

Thank you byebyec!  Today.  3 days left!

Feeling good!  (That's what I tell myself every day, even though I have some of those "old hepc physical flu-like yucky feelings" here and there, kind of scary but I try to override them).   I'm like... well...happy!

You know that song by Imagine Dragon (love that group) - "Sitting on Top of the Word" -  I have it on my ipod when I walk - kind of feel like that.  Think I'll go play it right now!

Thank you Cal.  I feel so bad for all that you are going through.  No Question, it's altering to go through this process, both physically and emotionally.  I hope the corner turns quickly for you.  I mentally keep psyching myself so I don't fall in to the quagmire of doubt and fear. I'm fortunate my symptoms have been so mild this time around.

Bree,
That's really kind of you. But I'm still kickin and gouging and I am still on the drugs! My biggest fear is being taken off them before EOT (2 weeks shy) like last time. You will see a flurry of manic posting from me in those last 2 weeks! Cal

Well, here I am - last day of treatment.  I'm quiet today - this is not only a physical journey, it is a mental and emotional one, and if you will... a spiritual one as well.

I feel optimistic and when fears crop up, rather than pushing them away, I just acknowledge them and re-direct my thoughts as best I can to what I want and believe to be true.  ("Oh there you are, you pesky little fear... it's o.k., I understand and now I have to embrace my new health").

I was telling HepC goodbye and then I realized, I already told it that before I started treatment... so it's gone!  It had it's time and now it left... Now... on with life!

Hi Bree,'
Sounds like your using some mindfulness techniques. I have been attempting to use the same. Sometimes I'm better at it than others. I think when your sick,  it's harder to be positive. But when you feel good, then you start thinking along those lines, and those fears are just pesky little annoyances. Good on you Bree. Cal 8)

Thanks Philly!  I enjoy your posts.  BTW... by granddaughter 2 years old, loves horses, no fear at all.   It started at a fair thing when she wouldn't get off the horse.  Her Mom is taking her riding on the big huge horses.  She absolutely loves it. My good friend, who raised thoroughbreds, said once you are hooked, it's over.

For me, I had a mean shetland pony when I was young. ha.

Hi Cal.  Thank you for your comment on the mindfulness.  I appreciate how real you are.  I know I've had it easier than many and it's hard when you have real challenges (been there and I remember).  I haven't had the riba to contend with which is a different ball game.

Truth be told, these last two days have been physically challenging... and I could go all over the place with that.  I didn't even want to give it power by putting it into words.  I was lucky I could take it easy and stay out of the "shoulds" (easier said that done too).

And my desire for a cure is so strong (as with all of us)... if I don't keep my eye on "managing my state" as Tony Robbins calls it, I'll succumb to symptoms (real or imaginary - difficult to distinguish at times), fear and anxiety.  It's effort.... and that's with having it relatively easy!!!

I'm going to see what I can do to live life... and see how I can move forward during this waiting phase.  Less focus on waiting and more focus on living life!
I'll just keep choosing gratitude.

Dearest Bree,
You too are honest to the core.  What you said here resonates clear as a shiny bell.

"And my desire for a cure is so strong (as with all of us)... if I don't keep my eye on "managing my state" as Tony Robbins calls it, I'll succumb to symptoms (real or imaginary - difficult to distinguish at times), fear and anxiety.  It's effort.... and that's with having it relatively easy!!!"

I use Russ Harris's The Happiness Trap" a mindfulness book and I have been attending (when well enough) a mindfulness course every Wednesday night. It's along the same lines. I see the sxs as annoyances that are getting in my way right now. Would be so easy to be fearful especially with the Riba anxiety and speeds. Yes you are lucky not to have the ribas, they mess with your head!

We have to keep on looking forward not inward or backward. Then no matter what happens post tx, we can realise our dreams of being HCV free. You are sooooo close Bree. Cal :-*

Sweet Cal... Mahalo (Hawaiian thank you) for that...

I read and study happiness a lot.  I'm one of those that needs that.  (And I took personal growth classes during interferon/riba to keep from going completely crazy.)

I am definitely starting a thread on post treatment.  Thinking about a name.  I want it to be positive and focus on the positive side of life after treatment.  Most of the SVR rates are encouraging and a lot of sides post treatment are scary and every time I go there I kind of freak out.  So I quit going there so I would quit freaking out.

We all need a safe place to land and discuss our fears and symptoms and concerns.  Often we are the only ones who understand.  It's also important for the ones trying to get treatment or scared to start treatment to have positive influence.  I want to hold that space for us.  I hope to contribute in that way.  Fingers crossed.

I have a few friends who believe I'm cured even when I get scared and talk me back into believing.  They refuse to let me go there.  I'm so lucky that way.  I pick my inner circle carefully. The mind is a powerful thing.

Why do they sometimes use placebos in clinical trials?  I think is because of the power of the mind to tell the body what to do!

What's so awesome about the forum is when one is down, we pick them up and vice versa.  Pretty amazing when you think about it... friends around the globe, no borders, no religious or politicial agendas... just wanting healing for all! I think we are making the world a better place!

I know... everyone come to Hawaii and visit me!   8)

Second best option... we could have a conference call.  I am used to moderating conference calls so I could facilitate... and we could think of a cool name... "Ohana" is the Hawaiian word for family.  The "Ohana of Hope" conference call... or something like that. Ideas?

I'm not so sure we need to refer to ourselves as Hepc'ers anymore.. because hey, we're not!!!  Past life!

Bree,
You have so much to give. If you can teach acceptance and mindfulness it will be so important to navigate the sxs. Post tx can be a sad lonely time, but it doesn't have to be. I think there is just such a let down after going through tx and it's expectation of instant health. Nut the immune system has to readjust to not having HCV and there's so many damaged areas which are in the process of healing. It all seems a negative thing, when it can be a positive thing, if you go with the flow and keep your head together. I never got over my first tx, but the battle was to keep my head together and not lose it because it was hard. You could do an amazing thread on that.
You'll live the a Happiness Trap, I bought a copy for both my sons. They have anxiety disorders. They love it. Cal :-*

I feel more quiet and introspective and feel like taking time to heal and listening to my body dictate the pace.  A nudge here and there doesn't hurt though :)  Maybe a happy medium is a good goal.

Well it's done!  Took last pill.  Kind of surreal.  I went to set my alarm for tomorrow, then realized I don't have to!  I'm pretty excited, I'm looking forward to this next step in recovery.

Thank you Harvoni (I love you), Gilead Support Path, Forum people, friends, docs and nurses, the pharmacy, the attorney, even my advocate at the insurance company (she tried anyway) and everyone who championed for me to have this cure.  I am eternally grateful!!!

Cal, yes no more pills will definitely be an adjustment, I think I'll get used to it quickly.  Harvoni is just one pill a day... still the psych is wrapped around it.

Thanks Else, thanks Philly and thanks ByebyeC!

It feels different to be complete!  My whole world has been wrapped around either getting Harvoni or taking it since January.  I began my quest to get it in January, that was a 6 month exhausting odessy... determined all the way... finally got it and started July 6.  Finished Sept. 28.

These last 3 days haven't felt great, I don't even think it's related.  I went in this morning to get EOT blood work and VL results.  Nurse was bossy, bruised my hand more than once, had to take extra vials and mix them together...completely insensitive... was a real buzzkill.  I told her how important this test was.  I left in tears... then I got in my car and thought... no, do like Taylor Swift and shake it off.  Much, much more important things going on here.

Still grateful beyond measure.  It's like an extra bounce in my spirit!

I hear ya, Bree.  I'm a couple of months behind you but have had the exact same year!  It gets all-consuming.

And yeah, you can't let one surly nurse rain on your parade.  She had a chance to take some joy in her work but missed out.

But you didn't!  Congrats again!!!

Hey Cal... I see my specialist Oct. 23... He's not one for extra visit.

But no matter, I can get my results through the portal at my health place.  Don't need to see him.  So I should have VL by this Friday (which is why I went today) as they send it off and it takes about 5 days.  If I wanted till tomorrow it would probably be next week.  I'll get the Comp and liver panel probably tomorrow or the next day.

Whoa, sounds incredible...

I so will do.  I feel like I am catching up to myself if that makes sense.  Glad I have a few light days with no big obligations.

Despite my Finish Strong and Stay Positive strategy, and a real emotional high, and positive outlook, and feeling great in general....I think I got a bug a few days before end of treatment, slight fever, etc.  No symptoms that I had been having at all.  I was running on overdrive a bit.  A little better today... emailed dr. he said side effect symptoms at this stage unlikely, not impossible but unlikely, and to see regular doctor if respiratory infection.  Don't feel like it's related to Harvoni or HepC at all... because I no longer have HepC!

I feel like the virus is gone, I just do.  Got my regular bloodwork back this morning... everything normal, all LFT's normal range.  Platelets a little low but then they always are.  Other than that, all good.   I'm still stoked, just slightly under the weather.... but not for long!!!

Nah, not related for sure.  There's been a bug going around here for a couple of weeks.  I had a touch of it myself last week.  Probably a PacNorthwesterner jetted over there for a vacation and brought it along.

Garlic, garlic, and more garlic!  I'm convinced it shortens colds.  I had it for 2 days, the rest of the house, over a week.

. . . Garlic, garlic, and more garlic!  I'm convinced it shortens colds. . . .
-and if you don't want to eat that much garlic, you can always do what Mom and her older siblings had to do growing up almost a century ago -- wear a garlic bulb like a necklace pendant. Mom's theory was that the reason it prevented colds was that no one wanted to get close to you.

Else and Gnat, that's funny.  My parents solution wasn't garlic but a "hot toddy" (ie whiskey and honey).... ha.  But then that was their solution for everything (not the honey, just the whiskey)... ha.

Not really a cold just that flu feeling.  In my business, I'm around visitors from the mainland and last week I was very busy... plus I ran around on a shopping spree (hey, early reward;).  You would be amazed how many people go on vacation sick.
I guess they already bought tickets.... I was feeling invincible.  Oops. Caught being human... again.

Gnatty, that's just plain silly.  Everyone knows that only wards off vampires.  ;D

Seriously, raw garlic (6-7 cloves) mashed with honey into paste.  Then just little bites with water over a couple of hours to get it down.  Don't, for the love of god, down it all at once!  I did that once and thought I'd burn a hole thru my sternum.

Hey Gnatty, This is the big day is it not?
Speaking of bugs, has anybody thought about how long they are going to wait before starting their supplement again?
BTW, Silly people! garlic won't work on Vampires except in the movies! After all I am one & I LOVE GARLIC!!!!! Gotta watch out for those stakes & crosses though!!!

Hey Gnatty, This is the big day is it not?
Yes, Tommy, 'tis. I took the last pill at 6 a.m. and snoozed some more. While Harvoni remains on duty for one final day, I replaced or triple-sterilized home and travel toothbrushes, razors, nail clippers, safety pins (great for removing plaque that manages to avoid toothbrush and floss), and a whole assortment of stuff I've had to use in my nose since I had two massive posterior nosebleeds last November. Once I've marked the final cup of fluids in my log this evening, that notebook will be put away, awaiting the next medical adventure.
Since you started a week after I did, is your big day October 7?
The only supplement I use was safe to use with Harvoni, so I can't answer your question.
You're a Vampire, eh? No wonder there's so much Hep C in the world!

I vant to drink Your blood!!!! As they shrink away from the garlic breath! LOL.
Actually Oct.6 is the official EOT date. Still a little anxious about not getting a viral load confirmation during treatment. I'll find out the outcome of the arbitration ( about the screw up & no show/but billed anyway ) on 4 week test SNAFU. Over all been feeling pretty good , but still have that rode hard & put up wet feeling most of the time. With the exception of the obsessive/compulsive pill counting!! ROTFL!

Tommy, I hope you're no longer floating battleships. Despite being a wildlife photographer, I don't own any hip-high waders. The virtual menu sounds terrific, and I like that any pounds I gain will also be virtual.

Hey Aloha Yall!  (Hawaiian and southern)... finally got back on the thread.

After the BBQ, we'll have to have a virtual luau!

Gnatty, I hear you... the last few days before I completed and right afterward, exhaustion (not the bad kind of fatigue) ... just exhaustion hit me like a ton of bricks.  I swear a lot of it is emotional.

Then, the flu bug.  Definitely a bug... my son had it and missed work 3 days. Lots of people around have it.  I was almost relieved so I didn't have to read anything in to it and let my imagination take over.

Today, getting better... need more time to get over this crud, but had a smile and a giddy feeling in my heart... like something really good is happening.  My eyes are whiter than I ever remember.... still feeling a bit punkish  but that stoked feeling is just waiting to burst out.  Funny thing...I have to learn again how to let it!  Hip Hip Hooray!!! For life!!!!

Thanks, Cal and Bree. I'd better not push myself for the next few days, then. Thankfully, no one around me seems to have the galloping crud right now, and I got my flu shot last week. I hope you can send your bug packing very soon, so you can enjoy this more carefree phase.  -Gnatty

It's a weird state. Friends keep saying, oh you're doing so well, chin up etc. I tell them I may look and feel sick but I am happy. They don't get it. But they aren't txing so I can't expect them to. Cal :)

Hello.  Just wanted to check in... I thought my EOT viral load results would be in today since I took the test on Monday and it usually takes 5 days but nope!   So my guess is Monday.  Interesting the challenge to go ahead and live even though waiting and not give it to much thought, time or energy.

I'm not quite sure how I feel...5 days after my last pill... still sleep is an issue.  I think from the forums I read that Harvoni stays in the system about two weeks (fine with me, the longer the better).

It's hard to know what's what with my body as I came down with a flu right before I completed treatment so much of this week has been a blur... however, gradually getting over that.  I do feel lighter if that makes sense... like I'm not dragging around that ball and chain anymore (aka Hep C)!    By next week I think I'll have more of a sense of things.  In the meantime, one day or one minute at a time!

Hi, Bree -- If I understood the hepatologist correctly, Harvoni has a half life of only a couple of days. This is my second day without the "Harvoni High," and I've got quite a bit of back and joint pain (noticeably more than on any day of treatment). It's less than I was accustomed to in the years when the lupus was active, though.

The hepatologists here don't do EOT labs, so December 23 will be my next VL. What will be will be. After receiving enough major diagnoses, I learned to be grateful whenever my body goes in for check-ups/maintenance less often than my car does. I'm enjoying having the extra white space on my calendar.

Glad your flu has just about run its course.

Hi Gnatty,

I saw a whole thread on the half life thing ... now I can't find it...and tried to deduce the whole half life thing.  It seemed like they were saying half of half of half, etc. came out to about 2 weeks.  But I could definitely be mistaken.  I think it was by Moderator Mike but not sure.  Wow, that's weird that it would only be in our system a couple of days.

Glad your calendar is open ;).  Mine too and I need it  open right now to take it easy.  I had told myself I would feel way better but it's hard to know what is from what.

You reminded my, I need to take my car in for a battery change as they had one on order for me.  Ha.  I guess we got our batteries changed too, metaphorically speaking.  Take good care of yourself.  Bree

Bree, the way a half life of 2 days works is that after 48 hours, only 1/2 (50%) of the original remains. After another 48 hours, only 1/2 of the 50%, or 25% remains. After another 48 hours, it's down to 12.5%, etc., so after 2 weeks, there's less than 1% (0.78%) of the original amount left. The really interesting thing is that there's always some of the original left, even though it soon becomes an infinitesimally small amount.

Thanks for that Gnatty!  Maybe it was you who had that post!  That helps a lot!

So I have about 25% left (that must be the insomnia part). ha.

What's interesting too, is that one time shot that is being tested they said can last for years, interesting how that can hang around in our system that turns over every so often at a cellular level.  Not sure I even know what I am talking about...

Anyway, whatever's left I'll take it, Harvoni can hang out with me anytime!
