Do share whatever your doctor advises, DM. I have had insomnia issues most of my life, which I now think may have been a byproduct of Hep C (which I probably contracted in my teens). My insomnia got much worse during tx - to the point where I really could not sleep at all some nights. But now that I am 10 weeks post-tx, I seem to be sleeping better than usual (i.e., better than pre-treatment). If that holds, that would be a very nice side benefit of clearing Hep C!

good luck,
kim

DM,
That's a bugger. Both the meds you took should have put you to sleep. The times when I don't sleep on tx is horrible and nothing works. Hopefully the Doc will give you some good stuff. Cal  :) found this from Msyo when looking fir test for RIBA saturation.
Elimination of ribavirin is also very slow, and due to incorporation of the drug into red blood cells, may take up to 6 months after the cessation of therapy. Ribavirin has shown teratogenic activity in animal models, thus patients are recommended to practice stringent birth control until at least 6 months after the end of treatment.

Nit to alarm you, just to validate the no sleep is probably RIBA related. Love them ribas!

He prescribed Ambien.   And look at his info and said that insomnia can be a side effect of riba.  I had never seen that before...
going to try one tonight if I have trouble.

I am just not sleepy.  It's real weird.  Gotta be the riba

Yep, love em.

The first time I tx'ed it took me about 6 months to start feeling human again and it was real sudden.... like one day I felt the same crappy way and then the next.... nothing!  But I don't remember having this sleep issue, in fact I am sure I did not.

Gonna try the Ambien tonight if I can't sleep.

DM, it seems our paths are similar.  I'm not sleeping a lot either but not as extreme as your insomnia.  And, I didn't have riba.  I took a half an ambien last night and a Xanax the other night.  I'm so careful with meds but I gotta sleep here and there.  I'm just wide awake after 4-5 hours or if I'm lucky 6 hours (and that's with ambien).

I was wondering if the body is getting extra alertness from not lugging the HCV around.  I was wondering if this is what it feels like (even though I'm dealing with remnants of the flu).

Did you get your blood work done yet?  I think you were getting yours after one week?  I had to re-take mine again today.  Doc accidentally ordered HBV test...

I think it is the riba that makes me have insomnia...

Yeah, I saw that about your doc ordering the wrong test....seems like everything that can go wrong now days does,..  Although sometimes I do seem to have more energy now.

Anyway, my blood draw is tomorrow and should have results by end of the week.

I should sleep tonight, problem is  you have to take the medicine and still have at least 7-8 hours to sleep.  Since I get up at 5am., I am going to have to decide by 10pm if I need it or not.  So will make that decision soon.

Oh good Heavens!!! Six months of riba post tx...  :o :o :o :o :o

Keep in mind that from what I have seen every one has a different experience on riba.  For some the worse is during tx, post tx is worse for others.

The only thing that has gotten better for me is I am no longer running out of breath... but the anxiousness, and irritability are just as bad as during tx.  I was the same way 1st time around..... was hoping this time would be different.... and it still could be...maybe it will only last 2 weeks this time!

Well, now I can sleep! Yay!  But I can only sleep for 5 hours.  So I go to be early in case I can't sleep , so I can take an ambien before it is to late.  Gotta be on the road at 6;30 AM.

So last night I just went ahead and took a half ambien, cause i wanted to sleep allll night.  But nooooo,  I woke up a 2:30.  5 hours sleep.  Stared at the ceiling for 2.5 hours.

Its almost like I don't need as much sleep as I used to ... but I love to sleep!  :(

Actually starting to feel a tad better each day...finally.

Marianne,
It will get better and you'll get better at knowing and accepting it. Like Tommy said you get used to the smell of bat shit after a while! Stay away from sharp objects.  I recommended a book to Bree I think. The Happiness Trap, it's explains mindfulness techniques. I woke up anxious as hell this morning and firs thought  OMG OMG I can't stand this etc. you know the drill.... then I used mindfulness ....Your just a feeling I am not going to let you change the way I do anything today. I am going to breath deeply and meditate when I have to. Oh and take valium hehe........Mother's little helper! If you get the book, I got my copies (I have copies for my sons too) from The Book Depository, I don't know if that's in U.S. or not. but Amazon would have it. I was never a big fan of self help books but this one is different. Its better than CBT. Just a thought. PM me if you get mad!!!!! :-X :P ::) Cal

Yeah, 5 hours is cutting it.  It is so weird.  Its like I don't need as much sleep as before...plus I am still very hyper

DM,
What day post tx are you now?
Those bloody ribas making you hyper still. I have been on a hyper binge for 3 days, each night I feel sick because I am doing too much, but the ribas keep telling me it's a good idea to do the tax returns, sort out sons driving test etc. etc. But my brain is clear enough to do these things. I am a machine. I do not like it.

It has to calm down eventually DM, you just have to go with the flow as usual. Wish you could get some sleep though. Strange that 5 hours seems enough. Ribas our little blue friends.  8) ::) :-\ Cal

Actually starting to feel a tad better each day...finally.

dm

DM, I know of what you speak!  Insomnia is the bain of my existance.. Used to be HCV, now its just insomnia.    I can get myself to sleep, like you, but usually wake up 4 or 5 hrs later, and then cant get back to sleep.   The only thing which lets me sleep longer is the antihistamine, Diphenhydramine, found in tablets by itself or in products like benadryl, unisom, etc.  But that stuff leaves me really groggy and fuzzy the entire next  day...   Ive found 5-htp to be of some help, and in a pinch, I have an ambien script for 10mg tabs of which I only allow myself 1/2.   If I get to sleep before 1am and wake up 4 hrs later, Ill take a quarter ambien sometimes, to try and get back to sleep a couple of hours.. Sometimes, after that early morning customary wakening, 2 valerian and a melatonin can help...  But usually, nothing helps, I have to make do with just a few hrs of sleep.   It can be a real quality of life killer.

Hi everyone
Yes I believe the RIBA does have that affect. Like some of you I have been an insomniac most of my life. 4-5 hours was the norm. But during TX seemed like there wasn't one night that I slep more than two hours without waking up. Then I'd be up for an hour or two and then down for another two hours.  It was horrible. Dr did I needed to get at least six hours to give my liver some rest. Never could. But now that I'm almost 1 month sine EOT and suddenly I feel better and getting at least 5 hours straight through most nights. Hopefully at my one month post TX labs will be undetected since I've yet to have THAT claim with HCV RNA detected but not quantifiable when <20 IU/ml.  Maybe you will feel  better when all is done. Here's the best to you all. I'm just sitting and waiting on pins  and needles awaiting the post labs for the 6 month results. Life is too precious for all. How fortunate we are to experience the TX.  We all have SO MUCH TO LIVE FOR!!!! Good luck!

I know what you mean MelHu about suddenly you feel better.  Thats the way it was my first round... felt like crap for months and then woke up one day and.... nothing!  it was very sudden.

Waiting on my EOT results now, they should call me today...hope so , cause I don't want to worry about it all weekend.

Does the insomnia that typically comes with Harvoni treatment go away once you are done? I've always been able to sleep and this is not good. Please post your experiences after treatment. "hope" "hope"

It went away for me, but be careful what you wish for. I've been needing about 9 hours/night post-Tx. Nice dreams, though.

Isn't it nice to pull up this site and see that someone's life has been saved every day? Some of us have side effects, some worse than others but nothing that compares to what could happen years down the road without Harvoni. As much as I whine about it, I have to say, I'm feeling so very lucky. Every day, there are at least one or two very happy members writing in to say they are free of the beast.

Thanks DM. You are already UND so this is just extra confirmation.  I wasn't expecting mine until Monday.  I'm lucky I get automatic notice through the portal when something comes in from the actual lab.  If it was up to my doctor, I wouldn't know unless I nagged them daily or saw him again in a few weeks.

Glad you are sleeping better.  Have a restful weekend!

Yes Julu you are so right. This forum has been instrumental in hashing through thoughts that run rampant on the brain. It helps to have input and idea and thoughts etc etc etc from others who are in the same boat. And yes the opportunity to treat this horrible demon.......we are so lucky. I'm waiting on the 19th of this mo th for my one month EOT results hope I clear as I'm still detected although <20 IU/ ml. Good luck to all!!!!! Now everyone get some REST!!

My lab has a portal as well... unfortunately in registering , I failed so many identity questions that they said I had to send in a photo copy of my driver's license.  Their questions were really stupid and taken from public records.   Questions like:  What length boat are you associated with?  Uh , kind of hard to answer when I have 3 boats.
Or, which residence were you once associated with:  6432 M St.,  5799 M. st,  1234 M. st.,  1234 N. st.
It was ridiculous and kind of irritating/creepy  that they had so much access to my past.

Anyway, sending in my DL photocopy tomorrow.

Worked a 15 hour day yesterday, with a pep rally and football game that night.  Didn't get to bed till midnight.  Just worn out.

Plus I think the riba is starting to weaken.

did any one on here  take vitamins and mineral supps at all taking harvoni   please I want to know for the sake of humanity ill just be honest im taking it all   milk thistle and a one a day  and other supps  I've seen a pattern those who didn't take stuff  suffer more side effect  one man 6 months out cured  is so weak he's now on b 12 injections  im trying to get an update on his condition , I know the doctors are saying no supplements   etc  but its  not proven its all to new they don't know so their error on the side of caution  might spell problems .  on the other hand  it could be said the same thing  for taking them  but I do see a pattern working the other way those who don't suffer as much took supps   but I need more stories more info  to build a bigger picture

Hi Hepboy1

I took vitamins B12 (1000mcg) & B Complex. Vitamin E (400iu) & D3 (5000iu) while on Tx. All made by Nature Made. Once in a while I would throw in a Cetrum Silver for men over 50. I still take the vitamins, along with my thyroid pill, as a habit now.

I talked to my doc about it first and he said it would be ok because it's something your body needs anyway. Personally, in my case anyway, I think it helped as far as the fatigue factor goes during & after Harvoni.
Pre Tx (VL 12043488) ALT 52/ AST 39
Harvoni Start Date 03/12
2 Week in Tx Results HCV RNA Detected, less than 15 IU/mL. ALT 19 / AST 19
4 Weeks in Tx Results HCV RNA Not detected. ALT 21 / AST 18
12 Week in Tx Results HCV RNA Not detected. ALT 17 / AST 19
--------------------------------------------------------------
Post 12 Week EOT Tx ALT 19/ AST 19 (Undetected)

I'm going to get same routine bloods done to test for deficiencies. Always err on the lowest side of normal.

I'm taking Alpha Lipoic Acid (Peripheral neuropathy) and Vit D and occasional Zinc.

All run by my Doctor. Cal
