Starting Harvoni 10/20/15
« on: October 18, 2015, 12:57:57 am »
Not sure if I'm doing this right, but 2 people suggested I start a new thread. I got approved by Gilead through Support Path coordinator at in-house Walgreen's pharmacy at hospital where GI doc is based. Expected nothing at all and have no idea why/how I got approved, but I did. 8 week Harvoni RX/TX and I start on 10/20/15. I am excited and nervous. After waiting forever and just knowing it would go nowhere, suddenly I was approved and and the meds were in the mail. $0.00 due by me, period. I am working-class poor and have no insurance. She told me that worked in my favor as people "with insurance" are having a hard time with denials, appeals, etc. How sad is that... For what it's worth, I know I am one of the lucky ones and I will do my best to honor the ones who are still fighting not only the disease but the system as well. Wish me luck and regards and best wishes to everyone else trying to get their meds. I will keep daily track of how the meds affect me and update as time goes on. I hope my "stats" show on my post, because I don't know if they do?

Good luck Mary Jo and welcome.

Great that you got the treatment.  Yes I have known 2 other people that were able to get Harvoni for free...which is wonderful.  I am one of those that fought my insurance through denials.  However, I ended up with 12 weeks and a mere 35.00 co pay.  I had cirrhosis and everything, but they still fought me tooth and nail.  Whereas, I gave a friend of mine all the Gilead info and in a few days she was accepted, just like that.

Now begins your cure.

Mary Jo, Sometimes things are just meant to be! Good for You. I have pretty decent ins. through work, But in about a month I had maxed out My deductible of $3500.00 , plus met My out of pocket at $9000.00 , and decimated My HSA account. I was starting to sell off stuff to get the cash to pay for Rx. as My Dr. said he was fast tracking Me to Meds, because of all the tests, scans, biopsies, and such. Said with the fibrosis & scarring as well as the Genotype that I was a prime candidate for treatment. That was like July 6th.  I was settling in for several months wait to get the Harvoni . Imagine My surprise when everybody started calling Me 10 days later to set up delivery of the Meds!!!!!!!! When the spec. pharm. called and said we need $5.00 for the first Rx. WOW, I was ecstatic. Even more surprising was when second and third Rx. came due I was told nothing more was owed!!!!!!! Truly blessed and Karma changed for the better. I feel kind of guilty that some of the more deserving & those more in need were having such a hard time. I guess it was just My time! Calling it a gift seems trivial, more like a Godsend to Me!!!!! Can't say it was free but I thank My lucky stars that I am in the right place at the right time for sure.

I WILL BE POSTING TELEPATHICALLY TODAY , SO IF YOU THINK OF SOMETHING FUNNY--- THAT WAS ME!!!

No kidding! I have a certain amount of guilt--- not that I haven't paid my dues in a number of way over the years, but it just seemed like "yeah, right..." I have said many times in my life that there is no magic pill for any of life's ails, but somehow THIS seems to actually be one! I am so glad you finally got yours and am so grateful to have mine. One pill, one day, $1125 @ and I'm sure my (our) life will change. Hopefully for the best!

Hi.  I just wanted to say that when I  called it a gift in my earlier post I was in no way intending to trivialize the blessing of this treatment, quite the opposite...rather my intention was with the utmost reverence for the opportunity that I/we have been given.  Sorry if my choice of words was misunderstood.  The sentiment was definitely there.

Nah, I don't think anyone's interpretation of this RX-- be it gift or godsend-- can be wrong or misconstrued. It is what it is and it's both and it's all of the above. "We" have all waited a very long time and have stayed upright (mostly) while waiting. You are all, we are all, on the same page. The sentiment is the same regardless of verbage. Love, light and luck to all!

I don't know what it means either for the buddy thing, but I like it too.
I love the little things... I love to dance, in fact, when I played the song, I was dancing (dog was staring)... I dance in the car, I dance around the house, way more since I got Harvoni.   My 2 year old granddaughter and I danced in Ace Hardware on Friday.  I hadn't seen her for a month and she said "I'm so glad I found you again."  I'm glad I found me again too!  ahhh.  Happiness level increased dramatically!  It is our time!

Bree , please tell Me I didn't hurt Your feelings????? It was not at all meant that way. Just My interpretation & observation. I in no way intended to diminish or belittle Your view at all. So Sorry if I did. Please forgive Me as You know My filter is non-existent!!! Always uplifted by Your shiny outlook and looking forward to more!!!
Your Humble Minion, Tommy. I make funny, You make bright as always!!!!

Thank you so much Tommy for saying that.  I try to be as honest with people as I can (in a considerate way) without putting my stuff on them even if I fear what happens next.  It did hurt my feelings. I meant what I said with a good heart. I did my best not to take it personal like I try to do with most things...I had a super sensitivity to everyone around me this weekend.  Not quite sure what's up with that... I know ... side effect!!! lol. It means so much to me that you care and acknowledged that.  You are a stand up guy!

Hi Mary Jo.  That's when I took my pill.  9 p.m. every night.  Worked well for me.  Felt like it helped put me to sleep and slept through misc. sensations.  I think you will do fabulously, you are going into this so upbeat... drink the water and listen to your body, especially first week.  Just getting going on this is a major part of the hurdle.  May the force be with you :)

Hey Bree... all,

I have most definitely had surges of sometimes overwhelming insecurity/hypersensitivity/anxiety come over me for spells of time.  Things that normally would not affect me, suddenly do.  Then later I can't imagine how they could have.  I recently compared notes about this with scout.  I do believe there is a strange Tx and post Tx side effect of intermittent spells over sensitivity.  Not to take away normal sensitive feelings.  They come in varying degrees.  A few time almost obsessive.  I have been able to tell myself the feeling will pass... anyway weird.  Just thought I would share... don't mean to be keeping on anybody's drama :)

Yep.  "Feel weird".  Me too and someone else agreed with that term - can't remember who.  Weird.  Odd.  Not bad though, right?  For me, that feeling wasn't at all unpleasant but sadly went away when I caught a really bad cold for a couple of weeks.  Never did come back.  So long to the "Harvoni high".   :(  Now I just have Harvoni energy.  Can't complain.  :)

Oh, I wouldn't call it that yet. I look forward to the "Harvoni high!" I feel just sideways and super tired, but I had to quit my St. John's Wort cold turkey too, so that may have something to do with it. But I don't feel anything that's any worse than a normal bad day. Tomorrow is a new day!

I did both Interferon/riboviran treatments and they did not work. Side effects were so bad I decided I would rather live with virus than treatment again. However I was told the new Harvoni treatment had little or no side effects so I started it August 01,2015. I was shocked at the little side effects. Just a  slight headache once in a while (alleve works fine on it) and I also noticed some more "fatigue" than I had normally. I feel real "heavy" and out of energy even after lite grocery shopping trip, but nothing compared to the Riboviran.
The best news is virus "FREE" at "1st blood test" after 30 days of Harvoni. I am doing 6 months of treatment and finish towards the end of Jan. 2016. The final test to be considered "cured will be 3 months after end of treatment. Lots of luck and do not be scared or nervous. This seems like a Miracle drug.

Just FYI...Have enjoyed this thread.  Listening to Paul in the background from earlier post.  Thank you Mary Jo.
Good luck to all.  We should have a post HCV party in 2016 on some awesome beach somewhere and celebrate after living with this devil 40+ years (for most of us).

Happy day to all :-*

Yep, Cindy party discussions are underway... We're all hanging loose till we get our equilibrium back and the final SVR cured status.  I'm in Hawaii so we are brainstorming possibilities.

Paulie, good for you.  I too, did the interferon/riba combo from hell.  Harvoni totally different experience.  I'm so grateful for this miracle drug!

Mary Jo, how are you doing?  You've been so quiet....

I just received my approval letter to start Harvoni treatment. After I read the letter I was paralyzed with fear. But after reading all the posts I feel confident about my treatment. I am an upbeat positive person. Always see the brighter side of any situation. Also strong. I feel confident about my treatment. I have no clue what my stats are. I will find that out later. I do know my genotype is 1A or was. I will keep posting until I am cured. :D

RedFoxJean,

Welcome to the forum and congratulations to you!  I am like you , I am upbeat and strong and positive and went into the treatment believing with all my being.  I am a pretty easy ride with the treatment and afterward. I'm so happy I often just start dancing.

I didn't give much power to the minimal side effects and still don't.  I'm 6 weeks post and will get lab results in a few days.  From 4 weeks till end of treatment I show undetected so expecting the best!!  It's looking more and more like I'm cured!  It's so worth it.

Drink lots of water and when you get your stats, if you put them in the signature line, it will show in all your posts and people can respond effectively.

Warmly, Bree
