Throat pain
« on: November 24, 2015, 10:22:02 am »
Hi all,    Anyone have persistent pain or other throat problems post treatment? My primary VA physician said the area looks like blister on the left side of my throat. Offered antibiotics but doesn't seem like an infection to me.  (12 wks post Veikira and Riba.)

Hi Rick,
I have absolutely no idea. But Viekira and ribas does not you around immunity wise. Did you take the anti biotics? I was on a lot of anti biotics during tx. Cal :)

No - didn't do ABs and still have the problem, although it seems a bit better today. What, may I ask were you taking antibiotics for?  Rick

Hi Rick,
I had lots of infections due to Ribas suppressing immune response. Throat and ear mainly. Did you get any infections on ribas? Cal

No infections while on treatment, but have had this area of waxing and waning soreness on the left side of my throat for a month.  Trying the antibiotics first thing Monday morning.    PS.    I have the suspicion that Ribas get blamed for many problems that they have not caused. Anemia certainly, but I have had riba before (twice) and never had any problems and I note Harvoni and Veikira uses complain of pretty much the same issues whether they took ribavirin or not.   Rick

Sorry Rick,
Have to disagree with you on the ribas there. I have taken ribas before too. I think ifn got blamed for a lot of things that were riba related. Like not everyone reacted to the SOC tx ifn/ribas, same with this tx. But in my experience on this forum and on my own (Australian) ribas are generally the cause of anxiety, hyperactivity, immune suppression, anaemia of course which comes with palpitations, weakness and nausea. Skin issues, I had open sores this time round and ulcers in strange places. I am still covered head to toe in riba rash. If you look at the sxs for ribas it's overwhelming. It is a bitter sweet drug, if it gets me over the line then I love it! Cal :)

Cal,   Sorry about your rash. I guess everyone has a different experience and reaction to these hi-power medications.
Got antibiotics today for my throat pain and am starting to get a side effect that is well known for Abs. A churning stomach and probably some trips to the bathroom tonight!    Good Health

I'm on Sovaldi/Ribavirin 12 week treatment. EOT in 3 days. Looking at post treatment threads now.

I have sore throat and sores at the back of my throat. But, I've had a lot of vomiting lately. I think it may be from that.

Hi Rubi,
Vomiting? Poor thing. Those sores in the throat are riba related. Get it looked at Ruby by the GP. You may need to have cream or gargle. Good luck. EOT so close too! It'll take a while for the ribas to ;eave the body but in a couple of weeks, you'll feel better. I am 6 weeks post riba only 1 week post Viekira. But still have all those pesky riba rash, gashes and slashes. Cal :o

Still have throat pain - antibiotics did not help. My primary care physician does not have a clue so a appointment with an ear, nose and throat doc is in the works! Had this problem for about 5 or 6 weeks now.

I'm kind of in a rut, Cal. My PCP quit. Like didn't show up for work one day quit. I have an appointment in January with a new one. My GI doc says there are no side effects with my meds. Therefore he does not treat them. So now I have to get established with a new PCP and get a referral to a new GI. So I've just been stuck with these really horrible side effects and no help through them.

These last few days have been really hard. I just lay there last night freezing under three blankets. Crying from the joint pain. Weak, tired but unable to sleep. I'm so glad I have people here who understand and keep me focus on the end result.

Thanx for letting me have my little pity party. I can do 3 more days. But for tonight I have to rest enough to be able to get a snack down so I can take my night dose of riba.

Oh Boy Rick,
Let's hope that the ENT can get to the bottom of things. Keep us posted. When is the appointment? We have to wait a while to get into Specialists here in Oz. Cal :)

HI Rubi,
You've had rotten luck. Your GI is a wanker and your PCP leaving. Very bad for someone having a hard time on tx. Is the Pharmacist a resource for you? Here we can talk to them about things and tell us whether they have an over the counter remedy or we need to see a GP.
Also is there a number you can call at Gilead? I have heard of other forumers getting advice from a Phone line nurse at Gilead about their Harvoni. So you should be able to talk to them. I feel so bad for you. Hold on and keep telling yourself this is not permanent.
BTW I had the freezing thing too. Cal :)

Cal,   I get treatment through our Veteran's Administration which can be a bit slow to get you in for any appointment, the pain has subsided some in the past few days and I am hopeful it is a treatment side effect that is going away. Now if the joint pain in my left thumb would stop I'd be right as rain.
My insomnia has finally started to fade and I can actually fall asleep now without taking something.  So take hope all who are suffering through post treatment issues and stay strong.     Happy Holidays

Thanx Cal. I actually talked to the Specialty pharmacy and the hep c hotine gentleman. Both were wonderful. Really, not much they could do but keep me incouraged. And the Hotline has a list of 'preferred doctors' for your area. I will get established with a new PCP in January and ask for a referral to a new GI from the list I got from the hotline. There were 3 that are on my insurance. I am not going to do my follow up with the old GI.

That said, I took my last pills Sunday (this is Tuesday morning). Yesterday was my first day off meds. I was still tired, but the hard fatigue did not hit until 5:30pm. Which was great, it usually hit about 11 am. I still had joint aches, but it was more isolated and not every joint in my body. I was not able to keep dinner down, but did keep a small bowl of icecream down later in the evening after I had time to rest. All of this is a small improvement. I've still got some christmas shopping to do so I will get some walking in today. Once I'm through Christmas I am going to begin an exercise routine of walking and some squats with an excersize ball. I have got to strengthen those large muscles and build some stamina. But, small steps.

Hi Rubi,
Happy that things are getting sorted for you. Congratulations for finishing tx! You sound like me, I have just come form Pain Clinic and Rehabilitation for my lost muscle mass. All slowly slowly. We'll get there. Cal :)

Rick, Rubi,

Hope the pain from the mouth / throat ulcers has subsided -- actually I hope you are feeling great!

I tend to get mouth ulcers, and have found that Lysine can help a lot. Lysine is an amino acid, and as far as I know it's not contraindicated during treatment, and post treatment should be fine. Also, rinsing / gargling with salt water can provide some temporary relief.

My dentist recommends Advil for the pain, but I know some people can't take Advil.

Sounds like this is related to the riba, which can cause heartburn and oral problems (according to the packaging...)

HTH,

Laura

Thanx Laura. I'll try to get that, but I am post treatment now and the mouth ulcers are much better. I am one week out and am still tired and weak, but not fatigued. Huge difference. I know I was really struggling the last 2 weeks trying to get out and get Christmas taken care of, but it's kind of like childbirth. You soon forget the pain and go on to enjoy your life. That's kind of how I feel now.
