EOT 12 Next Week
« on: December 24, 2015, 10:28:05 pm »
Well here We are! Next week I go in for EOT 12 blood work. Trying to stay upbeat. The Holidays are helping. Off work on vacation for the rest of the Year. Plenty of time to rest up & recharge the old batteries. Seem to be a little scatter brained. More so than usual. Not like brain fog, just not always able to connect the dots. Been mostly skulking around & reading posts. Longing for an extended tip to the country, but the funds are lacking.
Been feeling pretty good lately. Still getting a Migraine every couple of weeks. Not near as severe or long lasting as before. Lots of back and neck pain , as well as joint pain ( knuckles, knees, hips , and feet.) Once I get moving and get a hot shower it subsides to manageable. Against My better judgment I have been taking some pain meds. when it gets bad. Somas and Vicodin. With My past history I have to be extremely careful to not over do it.
Seem to have the lower G.I. distress under control. Started drinking Kefir smoothies with Blueberries or Strawberries. Pretty good stuff. Plenty of good bacteria for the gut. Works like a charm after everything else I have tried over the last eleven weeks.
Felt so good Yesterday that I baked Myself a Pecan Pie. Then made 3-4 dozen Triple chocolate chip cookies for Tomorrow. Thought about Else while I was baking them.
Still a little apprehensive about blood work outcome. But the odds are on My side, so-----! The little green monster sitting on My shoulder just won't give it up. I choose to enjoy the Holidays and My family and deal with what comes when it comes. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. So greatful for so many things and so many of You here on the forums that it really doesn't worry Me that much.

HERE IS TO ALL OF YOU WARRIORS AROUND THE WORLD. I WISH YOU ALL GOOD HEALTH AND THAT YOUR BLESSINGS BE MANY. HOLD YOUR FRIENDS CLOSE AND YOUR FAMILY CLOSER. REVEL IN THE REALITY THAT OURS IS A TRUE AND WONDERFUL SECOND CHANCE AT A LIFE THAT WE HAVE MISSED BATTLING THE VIRUS AT THE COST OF MANY THINGS AND MANY PEOPLE. PAY IT FORWARD, PASS IT ON, OR WHATEVER MAKES YOU HAPPY!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. Oh yea, and My personal message, too ;D

. . .
Been feeling pretty good lately.
. . .
Tommy, your upbeat, caring posts help the rest of us in Heplandia feel good, so you deserve to feel great. About the pain meds: you have the wisdom of experience, and your wariness towards them will help avoid the pitfalls.

A wonderful Christmas to you and yours, and may your new year be rrrreeeeeally happy!

A last moment of peace & quiet before all hell breaks loose here on the home front. A moment of clarity and retrospect for sure.
First, here is to all of You caring folks out there in Heplandia that make everything so much more bearable before, during , and after treatment. I don't think We realize the impact that We have on each other here! Now that is a real Christmas present that should blow Your dress up!
Second, the wealth of knowledge & research of everyone here is truly amazing. Between us , there is probably more info. than in the entire medical community. Yet not a doctor in the lot. Just think of the expense one would incur to achieve that level of knowledge and what good it could be put to if condensed and applied to do good?

Philly, You must be at the top of Santas' VERY good list. What with the SVR thing going on , going to see family in Canada, a trip down the Eastern seaboard, and a trip to Cuba. You deserve it by the way.

Gnatty, Always there with the right words and encouragement. You should be named the Honorary Mother Hen and Logistics Queen of the Order of Warriors of Heplandia! Hope You and the Family have a great holiday season. Thanx for the thoughts and vibes My Dear Buddy. You have no idea the enjoyment our conversations and posts have meant to Me. By the way , We are running around in shorts, tee shirts, and flip flops right now. A real redneck Christmas .

Yeah , but it's supposed to be semi cold here on the third coast! :o ??? ::)

The old body seems to have taken a turn for the worst after Xmas. Went to the Chiropractor and Massage Therapist for the back & neck issues Monday. Go back in Tomorrow & also will see the Physical Therapist. Will be discussing different types of massage as well as possible acupressure/acupuncture treatment. Will be talking about the Migraines also.
G.I. said check with G.P. about Migraine and lower g.i. issues. He referred Me to an internist who I also see tomorrow. The internist is a well known Head of Emergency room and Trauma surgeon at My hospital that has gone into private practice. Apparently He is highly trained and schooled in both Eastern and Western Medicine as well as Acupuncture/Acupressure treatment also!
Then I also have two or three lab trips this week also. So much for Vacation down time! :( ??? ::). The only one I give a crap about right now is My SVR12 labs. Getting antsy just thinking about it as we speak!

Bree, Crystal balls be damned! :P :D 8) ( NO OFFENSE just a statement) . I got this and I know it. Just need to see it on the official letter head for peace of mind!
The weather finally cooled off to where I had to put on some shoes and a long sleeve shirt and pants after Xmas. Sounds like You are doing most excellent these days! Glad to see that, Keep up the motivational cheer and innate bubby attitude that You have. It's very infectious in case You didn't know it. I need to catch a big ol' case and not treat it! LOL! 8)

Gnatty,  Santa was actually pretty good in that I felt pretty good through most of the Holidays. The whole CREW,(Kids , grandkids , dogs , & granddogs LOL, were here for Xmas. Made pancakes & bacon for seven people and and four dogs! I was a little tired but it was great. Kicked back after the present melee and let the girls do up a righteous midafternoon lunch. I miss the crowd. but not the mess! LOL!
By the way , I prefer to think of it as a Texas size Prickly Pear Cactus instead of a puny little ol' Voodoo Doll! Also, don't stand in front of the door on the other side! I plan on kick in' that Sumbitch off the hinges God willing & My back don't go out!! 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

I'm so excited about your upcoming labs, Tommy!!!  Been off the boards doing holiday galley duty.

Awesome that you got your tummy-troubles sorted out for the most part.

It sounds like your doctors still have some fine-tuning to do.  I like that your new doctor has a broad range of training and expertise.  That is huge!

I'm moving up on 4 wks post-tx.  Antsy is a good word.  Aside from sleeping 10 hours a night, all is well.  Two more months before I see... who?  My liver doctor is closing her practice as of today.  Hopefully, all follow-up care can be done by my GP.  Just bloodwork, I'd think.

Speaking of bloodwork, ya'll should have seen the inside panel on my car door.   ;D  A little home car repair cost me the skin on my knuckles.  Happened early on so I got to bleed all over everything - stupid bandaids float right off.  But duct tape and papertowels worked great.  And I fixed it!!!   ;D

Now on to the chainsaw today!  (no, I probably shouldn't be doing it!  :o)

Hey Else,  Hope You had a good Xmas with the family. What are these bandaids You speak of??? Hell, duct tape , masking tape , electrical tape and papertowels are the standard down here in Texas. As long as it don't need stitches, pour some alcohol or Merthiolate on it & go to town wrapping it up!
Will You be getting an SVR4 blood test? Hopefully You can hook up with a new Doc that You trust & like. The GP should be able to order Your blood work as needed.
BTW, I'm not allowed to play with the chainsaw as last time I missed the bed of the truck with the tree and it landed on the cab! Close only counts with hand grenades, horseshoes, and nukes!LMFAO!
Funny that for the last 7 or 8 months My blood pressure has been 135-140 over 75-80, now it has jumped to 150-160 over 88-93!! That just adds insult to injury. Now I go on BP Meds. Lucky shit, Huh? Chiropractor/Physical Therapist/masseuse seems to be making some head way on the body issues. Internist want to give BP Meds a month to see if the Migraines go away. If not it back to a new battery of tests to try to determines the cause. Says a CAT scan will be the first stop. It just never seems to stop. By the time I can retire , I won't have the money to do so. Can You see Me as the Greeter at Walmart. GET YOUR CRAP AND GET OUT OF HERE LADY!TAKE YOUR RUGRATS WITH YOU!  LOL!!

Happy New Year all!!!  ;D

I hope the BP meds help with your migraines.  Do you have a BP cuff at home so you can monitor your own blood pressure?  You might be able to map out some sort of pattern.

But it does sound like you're getting things tended to, one at a time.  Think of yourself as a home renovation.  Or is it restoration?   :o

No more blood tests for me until 12 wks post-treatment.  My GP wants me to contact the liver clinic to contact her with follow-up protocol.  I'll call on Monday - here's hoping they'll do that.

p.s.  loves me some chainsaw!  It's hard to stop once I get going.  I get a 'slash and burn' mentality going.  :)

I think it was Philly or Bree who said that keeping busy helps with the waiting (i.e. lab results ) but this is ridiculous.  The last two weeks I been to My G.I.once, internist once , chiropractor three times , physical therapy, masseuse three times, and the lab twice. I have five or six appts. set up for the next two weeks allready. I swear that I have been to more Doctors in the last two weeks than In the last twenty years!!!!! :o :( >:( ??? ::) :P
But, if I am going to talk the talk, I'm going to walk the walk! Get to steppin' Big Boy. Onward through the frogs as it were. Keep on truckin' mamma! It does seem more than a little strange that I had didn't have Migraines or high blood pressure before Tx.! During Tx. the Migraines came but BP was O.K., now the BP goes up and Drs. say it is the BP causing the Migraines :o :o :o :o >:( Not that I'm blaming the Harvoni, it is just plain annoying the way they talk around in circles when a readily apparent cause is not apparent and they are not capable of saying " Sorry we don't know"  ???
Oh well, more trials and tribulations of a Hepper. Suck it up. Same story different chapter. I got this , I just don't know when I'll be able to get a grip on it or when it will end! Probably never ;D ;D ;D

Thats just it... they don't know.... and too proud to say otherwise.
My pcp prescribed an steroid inhaler during tx.  Just to be safe , I researched it when I got home and found out that if I have used it , it would have caused some weird damaging syndrome.
When I told him I wasn't using it , he prescribe another inhaler.  This one had no issues, but it made me feel like crap and didn't work.   It also made a weird patch on the back of my throat (thrush?) , that made me try to swallow it all the time.  Went away after I ceased use.  one thing after another.  ugh.

Way to go, Tommy.  Just keep putting one foot in front of the other, frogs be damned.  (Frogs?  :o)  When is your viral load test?

I wish they knew by what mechanism the Harvoni causes headaches in the first place.  There seems to be a missing puzzle piece.  The resulting headaches are so well-documented, you'd think there would be some research into the cause.  As in, "the medicine is doing this as well as acting as an anti-viral.  And this causes headaches."  What is the this???

DM, I'm so glad you checked out that inhaler first!  A good lesson for all.  Do your own homework, as much as possible.  Rxlist.com is a good place to start, along with a general google search.  It would be so lovely to just blindly trust all doctors and rely on their years and years of education.  But you just can't do that.  There's too much info, too much new info, too many patients, etc.

 Else,
Got an extra BP cuff and am taking an AM and PM check to make a record. Did My blood draw 12-30 , so I should get results in a week or so. If not G.I. check up is 1-18 for EOT 12 week post appt.
Frogs are a reference to the little bastards in My brain hopping around & mixing things up for Me. I am lucky that the headaches are getting fewer and less severe allready. Maybe the BP Meds. will help. Keeping My fingers and toes crossed! :) :) ;)
Hoping this will make a difference for future Tx'ers. The new Internist wants to take care of the obvious before tackling the obscure to see what happens.

Well, Today is the day!!!! I go in this afternoon for My post EOT 12 week Lab results at G.I. Doc.! Actually have a mild feeling of paranoia at the thought of the appointment. However, I need the results straight from the horses mouth as it were. Then , Wednesday I go in for results from a new set of Labs. for My Internist. Been feeling pretty shitty lately. Headaches, though less severe are still around. Tired most of the time even while sleeping good. Every 10-14 days the lower G.I. issues pop up out of nowhere for 2-3 days then go away. Body & joint aches are being kept in check with Chiropractor, Massage Therapy(Lymphatic stimulation not deep tissue), and some P.T. advice. Neck , back , shoulders, and knees mostly. Very annoying, however not debilitating. Still working 45-50 hours a week. ( Can't afford not to.)
Blood pressure still up in the 145-160 over 85-95 range even on Meds. I started 1-2-16. I get the feeling the dose is fixing to go up. Wish I knew the cause of that???? Odd little patches of itchy rash popping up & disappearing just as fast. When they stick around for a little while I have been using Corn Huskers lotion and Petroleum jelly to control it.
Been wondering if the lower G.I. issues is the body purging itself of toxins and dead liver tissue? Stands to reason , since the liver is in bad shape and the virus has been wreaking havoc since 1973!
Don't misread into this that I am blaming the Meds, I AM NOT! I knew going into treatment that this wasn't going to be easy. Still have a positive mind set. Knowing from reading other posts that this could take 6-12 months or possibly longer to level out.
The thing I miss most is the level of concentration to read more than a chapter or two of a good book before losing concentration or getting blurry vision. I have about six or eight rather lengthy books to catch up on as I improve. Any way----------- :( :( ??? ??? ::) ::) :P :P :-X :-X :-\ :-\ 8) 8)!

Hope everyone is doing better or improving little by little as I am! Especially Cal and Marianne , both of whom I have not seen nor heard from in a long time.

TO ALL OF YOU OTHER NOBLE WARRIORS FOR THE CAUSE I RAISE A REBEL YELL TO GO FORTH INTO BATTLE WITH. FIGHT WELL AND FEAR NOUGHT. FOR GOD IS ON OUR SIDE!

Good luck today, Tommy on your EOT 12 tests!! I am going in today for my EOT 24.

I hear ya about feeling like a train wreck post-treatment. All I can say is that, whatever the cause of this post-treatment 'syndrome' that strikes some of us, it does seem to gradually lessen and disappear. I am FINALLY at a good level of functioning again. And I would say my brain is definitely working better than before treatment. But it took me most of 6 months post-tx to get to this point. And I had many weird things going on in my first months post-tx that I never experienced during tx or prior to tx. But that stuff's pretty much gone now. :)

I think the lymphatic stimulation is one of the most important things you can do at this point - whether by self massage, or professional lymphatic massage, or even just walking and bathing. All help.

good luck!

Sorry you have had a such a go of it.  The things I have experienced (and there are some) have been minor for the most part in comparison.

Thanx Kim. I have been talking with several of the Massage Therapists about the Lymphatic system and manipulation. I wanted to have some deep tissues massage for the back and neck muscles, but the Chiro & therapist say NO!!! The lymphatic system responds to gentle massage and movement.  Deep tissue manipulation closes the passageways, therefore RETAINING fluids rather than RELEASING them. Also, they have been showing Me self massage and movement techniques I can do on My own. Funny that one came up is bouncing on the trampoline for short periods in My spare time. Still have the big ass trampoline in the back yard that I bought for the kids Years ago. Still in good shape too! Still have several certificates to use as needed for Massages . I bought a bundle package when I first saw the chiropractor.

                 Thanx Again,

Bree, I appreciate it. The thought that comes to mind as appointment time approaches is the sound track from Jaws just before the attack. Staring slowly and at low volume then ever increasing  as the shark closes in.
Very dramatic effect indeed, or was that My elevated blood pressure and heart rate ;D ;D ;D
Something else crossed My mind as I read Your post. Do I remember You saying something about redoing old dental work?  I have always had bad teeth due to damage, lifestyle choices, and Hep C as well. I have always tried to keep them repaired as much as possible. That being said , I have a mouthful of lead based fillings in My mouth. As soon as I level off I am going to speak with the dentist about them.

Hope You have been able to crawl out of Your crap hole some and are feeling better. Funny the words on the paper can soothe the doubt so well!

Funny you should mention chainsaws!  I had the pro's out to thin out my dinnerplate maple tree in the backyard.  It felt so wrong.  :(  I HAVE a chainsaw.  And I can climb a tree as well as any young pup.  But!  I don't have the insurance that would cover me dropping a massive limb on my neighbor's shed.  Said shed has a rather spendy gas kiln inside.  Boom!   :o    So I wimped out and left it to the pro's.   ::)

My 12 wk EOT isn't due until Feb 29th.  In the meantime, I'm short one doctor.  My hepatologist's (who closed her practice on Dec. 31st to move elsewhere) office is not returning my calls.  I want to do my follow-up labs with my GP but she wants "follow-up care instructions" from my liver doc first.  ???

Seriously debating on going to a public health clinic and getting tested for Hepatitis C.  That's all I want to know.

Hey Tommy, speaking of lymph drainage, during treatment I tried to find a lymph massage therapists but she was busy and told me to buy a rebounder, which I did and jumped on every day during the last month or so of treatment.  I wanted every nook and cranny exposed.  I'm not using it now, but you inspired me to use it again.

For the teeth thing, I grew up in the south, where apparently they don't believe in dentist. Just kidding!  A few years ago, I had all those old fillings replaced with the newer and prettier and healthier white ones.  Over the last few years, I have gotten a few crowns and just recently got 2 more.  Trying to keep it all together man!  I want to end up with teeth!  And nice ones.

Yep,  I still have my own doubts.  Hard to process.

Feeling a little better each day.  Just want to feel the way I did before tx.

lymphatic massage is a new trendy ("natural")/ come homeopathic way to relieve the pressure of a patients stuffed wallet by gently squeezing the lymph glands over multiple treatments and telling them it will help them heal infections whether imaginary or real.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QA-wi0d7-Ro

Whether or not massaging the lymph glands will help to remove any dead HCV particles post treatment is very dubious, considering they are largely cleared by the renal system and digestive tract. This is because of the nature of the cell and chemical processes that clear hep rna strands and dead liver cells. Thank heavens lymph system is not effected by HCV in the same way as it is with some diseases especially advanced cancers.

But heck if it feels good and you believe it is helping? Go for it! Personally I think a good pedicure post treatment would be a better choice though.

That might be a wise decision looking at the avatar! LMFAO :D Old school Swedish style massages were basically the same thing. Now everyone wants to name it & charge extra. Greedy just like big Pharma. A massage therapist that has been properly trained in this day and age knows about the Lymphatic system and generally includes manipulation in a general massage.  When specified , they will usually spend time on the complete system. Not just the glands! The Lymph system as has been explained to Me is similar in structure to blood vessels with out the pump (Heart Muscle) . Therefore stimulation manually increases flow, but is not a cure all or medical procedure. It is an effluent massage rather than a muscle manipulation or deep tissue sports massage as these close and impede the flow of the system. It works for some people but not others. Like hair products or lotion.
A matter of personal preference. It is not meant to remove dead HCV cells, but to improve the flow of Lymph fluids in the system. If it doesn't flow through it doesn't reach the renal system or digestive tract. especially since modern day life styles have become more sedentary , as well as all kinds of nasty stuff in our food and what we breathe or touch daily.  Granted nothing has been proven in relation to HEP C, it does no harm! AND it feels great!

Re:  Lymph drainage.  Tommy's answer was excellent and way more in depth than I know.  What I had heard, read about and believe, is that clearing lymph can also detox and clear toxins and things that hide out (like HCV).  That's why I sought a specialist for lymph massage which is different than muscle massage (check out you tube).  I was told to buy a rebounder (which I did) and jump on that to get lymph system flowing.

Having failed a prior treatment (or rather the treatment failed me) I didn't want those nasty buggers to have anywhere to hide. If there is something I could do to help it out, I wanted to try. If someone told me standing on my head would help, I would do it.  And by the way, inversion does help or laying on floor with legs up wall all help lymph drainage.  NOT an expert, just read about it and studied exercises and did them.  Nothing to lose, everything to gain.

I did read a little about lymph system in cirrhosis. They believe ascities and edema are partly caused by excess lymph fluids in the interstitial space however they did not mention massage as a method to reduce this fluid. Although they are looking for methods to reduce lymph fluids and thus ascities. Otherwise I didn't see anything about hep c and lymph fluids

Went to the Gilead Website to the Harvoni Wall to check it out. I was mildly surprised that only two people were signed up from the State of Texas!!! I know of several people post treatment and a couple currently on treatment, and apparently they don't know or haven't checked out the site! While I was there I signed up for My complementary after treatment completion Harvoni key chain and got on the Wall. Has anyone else checked out the Website? I remember reading that Lynn K. had when she achieved SVR. Debating on whether or not to mount My SVR lab results for shits and giggles!

Tommy, those are terrific ALT and AST results -- I have enzyme envy again! Were the glucose and cholesterol tests done after >= 9 hours of no food/drink (except water)? If it wasn't a fasting test, your glucose level may actually be okay and the LDL cholesterol result will be inaccurate. To take care of the HDL, just eat a little more "foliage" (as my mother likes to tease my vegetarian cousin).

Interesting, this would indicate that clearing too much lymph fluid all at once might become a slight problem for those who have compromised renal functions and ascites from cirrhosis leaking fluids into the abdominal space. Makes sense. I would think that gentle slow full body exercises and healthy habits will do more to improve lymphatic flow than any massage technique can especially for those of us living with cirrhosis and the possibility of ascites because of HCV.
Caution shameless self promotion below :-)

That being said, it stands to reason that the gentle slow full body exercises would also stimulate the Lymphatic system to a greater degree. I would assume that the issues of ascites and edema would be addressed medically before one takes on any actions that could possibly compromise themselves to the point of harm. As far as the healthy habits I believe that all of us strive for that goal. As with any actions taken one should become informed and consult with their medical  team before adding or changing anything in their regimen as I have. Personally , the things that I have been doing have been run by My G.I. , Chiropractor, G.P. , as well as My Internist before applying them . To bad that there isn't a regimen that is one size fits all.
ALWAYS , AND I REPEAT ALWAYS, CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTORS ABOUT THESE THINGS BEFORE IMPLEMENTING THEM IN YOUR REGIMEN AS THE SLIGHTEST THING CAN BE DETRIMENTAL TO YOUR HEALTH AND WELL BEING.
My internist is schooled in Eastern and Western medicine and has consulted with My G.I. about the problems I have been having. Starting with range of motion in the neck and back. We have been discussing a course of action for My situation which has included the aforementioned massage, It is not a prescription , it is meant to aid in My recovery. Just as one uses hot showers, saunas, Yoga, Tai chi, and stretching exercise to achieve better range of body motion.
As I still am working 45-55 hours a week full time , as well as keeping up the household and the family, I will take all of the help I can get. I hope this perspective is helpful to some of You out there.

AGAIN, RESEARCH & GET INFORMED. THEN DISCUSS ALL OF THE OPTIONS WITH YOUR MEDICAL TEAM PRIOR TO UTILIZING SAID KNOWLEDGE. BE CAREFUL ABOUT WHAT YOU READ AND GOOGLE AS SOME THINGS CAN BE WRONG AS WELL AS MISINTERPRETTED LEAD TO HARM.

What Tommy said.  There are even articles on other Hep C websites about Lymphatic health. Lymph massage is a gentle stroking of the skin.  I even followed a do it yourself instructional article along with using the rebounder.  No need to dive off the deep end with too much too soon of anything.  The idea is everything flowing in the body is a good thing.  My two cents.

Hey Tommy, my sister got bitten on two of her toes by a cotton mouth when we were young.  I'll spare the details but that took a normal healthy fear of snakes to a whole new level.... a phobia.  Which is why I can't handle the thought of snakes.  (probably under the TMI category, but want to share it;)

I did not see anything saying a massage would have any effect.

Only that cirrhosis induced leakage of lymphatic fluids is related to ascities. They are looking for medical solutions to reducing cirrhosis caused portal hypertension induced lymphatic leakage not massage.

Still waiting for my magic pill to reduce my liver scarring and portal hypertension to keep my esophageal varicies away and get rid of my edema.

Hey it could happen 2 years ago I never would have thought I would be hep c free now
