High ALT and AST after 1 month EOT
« on: March 03, 2016, 12:02:32 am »
Dear All

Its one month now I finished my SOV+RIBA 24 weeks treatment for GT-3a.

I went for blood test and my ALT 57 (Max range-41) and AST 41 (max range-40) are elevated.

Is it a concern that HCV may have returned? Thinking of this makes me really feel sad.

Nonetheless my doctor does not want to comment and has requested for a viral load test next week.

There are different things that can raise ALT and AST the only way to know what is going on is go have a viral load test.

Wishing you good luck

Thank you for the link MSU. I got my viral load back and am udectected but i did not get a response about the rise in my alt. I rather jump right back on treatment now since i just stopped if i need to so answers would really help me.

Hi Ms and welcome

You might want to read this article but basically elevated liver enzymes could be caused by different things. How long after treatment was this viral load taken?

What do high (elevated) liver tests (AST and ALT) mean?

http://www.medicinenet.com/liver_blood_tests/page4.htm

"AST (SGOT) and ALT (SGPT) are reasonably sensitive indicators of liver damage or injury from different types of diseases or conditions. However, it must be emphasized that higher-than-normal levels of these liver enzymes should not be automatically equated with liver disease. They may mean liver problems or they may not."

Our genotype (3a) is not the easiest to treat, but you do need to keep positive about your treatment working.  The mind is a very powerful tool, and can overcome insurmountable situations.

I am paranoid about relapse, but I had a very good in-my-face reason to be paranoid about it.  Every time my bloods come back undetected I feel less and less paranoid, and more and more like a vanquisher of dragons, lol.  *puffs out chest and flexes muscles*

In my experience, and we are all different, treatment messed me up with severe anemia during treatment.  RA runs in my family, and that seemed to also have become a bit aggravated, but nothing debilitating, and shortly after treatment stopped I had a small rash on my belly which disappeared within a few days.

I'm still waiting for bloods to get perfectly back to normal, but they are headed that way.  *thunbs up*

Anyway, the point of all that being, you just came off of taking some pretty powerful drugs religiously for 6 months, then you abruptly stopped.  We can all expect our labs and bodies to be going through adjustments.

If you were an avid coffee-drinker for 6 months religiously, then abruptly stopped, it would not be hard to imagine feeling messed up until your body adjusted to no longer having the caffeine multiple times a day, as an example.  If something as mild as caffeine can have us all messed up, its not hard to imagine something like chemotherapy having us all messed up for a while.

I hope your AST/ALT gets back to normal on your next labs and relieves your mind of any further worry regarding relapse or cancer.

Until then, live for today, and worry about being happy.  You can trip on the sidewalk or slip on a banana peel, get hit by a bus or train, or any number of ways we can die right now, and then all the time we spent worrying about relapse etc would just be time and energy we wasted.

Be happy!  Best wishes! :)

Hi All

Wanted to share the gud news...

Got my VL back UND  :) :) :)

Overjoyed and delighted and took a sigh of relief after getting the report.....

Asked doc about the high ALT n AST levels and he thinks that this might resulted from the workout i started after the EOT. He is now 99% sure that i will achieve SVR since 1 month result replicates the 3 months result EOT.

Cheers

MSU,
I was sweating my 12 week post tx VL results also.  I was able to access my LFT's which were mildly elevated...specifically my AST which was 44!  I was certain that I relapsed.  It took several days (with a weekend filled with angst), but learned my VL 12 weeks post tx remains negative...Yippee!  In exploring what could cause my AST's to elevate (I don't have other risk factors such as alcohol or fatty liver disease), it was determined that this was caused by exercise - specifically marathon training!  I ran 17 miles on Sunday before my test on Wed and 7.5 miles on Tuesday the night before my blood test.  They believe the AST elevation was d/t muscle damage which happens with extreme exercise.

Glad to hear you had good results in the end.  Good to hear from someone else with a similar experience with elevated LFT's not from relapse.

So glad I found this.  I'm now 5 weeks on Harvoni and prior to treatment ALT was 37, now 1212 and AST was 39, now it's 888.  Good news, virus showed not detected.  My doctor has no idea and said he'd never seen this before.  Anyone seen this drastic increase in enzymes after beginning treatment?

I was on Abvie and just had my 1 month eot blood work and my liver readings were perfect and i remain undetected. One more test to go. :)
Be patient with temporary rises in ast and alt as mine it also. It did settle down. Hang in there everyone. :)
