Looking into the best treatment for me
« on: August 15, 2016, 06:33:12 pm »
Hi,  My name is Lori and I am new to this forum, and very grateful that you are all here.  I have geno 2b for about 40 years. Viral load almost 2 mil. Log: 6.3.  All my other blood work and liver tests are normal range.  I am 60 years old, very healthy and participate in sports. I am investigating treatment at this point.  I will see a specialist on Wednesday.  I know he will need to assess a fibrosis or some type of liver score.  Here are my questions:
1. Besides the fibrosure blood test, what is the liver scan/ultrasound called so I can ask him about it?
2. What are the current treatments for Geno 2b? (I do not want ribavirin)
3. In case my insurance denies treatment, are their overseas treatments for Geno 2b?
If you have any other suggestions I am open to hearing all of them.  Thanks so much

Hi Lori,
Welcome to the site, A lot of people on here know more than me and I'm sure you'll get a lot of replies. I can't remember what the test is called, its like an ultra sound but it thumps against the skin, that will tell them where your liver is at and the doc will decide which txt is best. If your insurance would denie txt there are a lot of options. When you have time read through allot of the posts you will find a lot of info. 60 and participating in sports, I'm jealous I'm a few years younger and pretty much a couch potato! Best of luck.

Hi Lori,

The liver scan/ultrasound you are talking about is called Fibroscan.

Depending on where you are and what your insurance may cover, treatments excluding Ribavirin that genotype 2 will respond well to are Sovaldi+Daklinza or Epclusa.

If your insurance denies treatment you should appeal that but if that fails then equivalent generic treatments are available from overseas. One reliable source of those is https://fixhepc.com

They run the following 'Redemption' clinical trials https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02657694?term=REDEMPTION&rank=1

Best wishes for a successful treatment.

Loria, I don't blame you at all for wanting to avoid taking ribavirin.  There are safer and more tolerable options today, so fight for them.  My insurance wanted to give me an option w/ riba, and I fought to get Harvoni and took it to my state insurance board, which overturned their denial.  It wasn't a fun process, but I am very glad I went thru it, as the Harvoni course of treatment was extremely uneventful.  There is some info on this forum on the Daklinza course, but the Epclusa is so new (June, 2016) that that there isn't much on here yet.  Ask your doctor any and all questions tomorrow and be sure you are comfortable with whichever course of treatment you pursue. Best of luck to you and keep us posted, FT
