Hahahaha...I just take bears in stride and became quite fond of them when I did field research...cautious but fond.  They are eating machines this time of year and I am sure the ripe apples fragrance brings them in for the treat.  The apples were so flavorful this year.  Had some close bear encounters in the field and respect their strength and agility.  For a couple years in a row I didn't get a single apple because of an old black bear that camps out above me.Then no one has bothered them for the past 2 years so I figured he died.  I don't want barbed wire or an electric fence so I just don't worry about it.  They come and go and now my trees are tall enough where the bears can't reach some of the fruit.  I'll share with them and not complain much.  At least he didn't break up the branches which irritates me, and I still got a bucket full.

Sorry to post this unrelated stuff, but sometimes it is nice just to read a story other than one of Hep C.  We seem to get to know one another here and that's part of building trust and being open with such personal information, so it's fun to share part of my life.

Have a good week, everyone!

Katie

Bix, I think you posted it correctly.  Its impossible to know anything for sure unless the info is provided to us. .I was just commenting on it because I felt it very unlikely that youd have a viral load < LLOQ at 12 wks post treatment that was any kind of relapse. I think it just doesnt work that way.  At any rate, your amalagamation of the data is very useful, and no small undertaking, since the data on this board is all over the place.

Thanks again!!!

  • Get tested, get treated, get cured, fight Hep c!
technical definition:

The LLOQ refers to the lowest HCV RNA concentration that is within the validated quantitative range of an assay. An undetectable result indicates that HCV RNA was not detected in the sample. The limit of detection and the limit of quantification vary according to the assay used.

Basically the test has the ability to "count" number of virus in a blood sample down to a point the LLOQ. Below that number of virus particles (IU/mL) international units per milliliter of blood the test can still detect the presence of the virus DNA but can't determine how many there are per mL.

So a LLOQ of say 15 for example the test can detect there is virus DNA present in the sample but only knows there are less than 15 IU/mL in the test sample.

And whether those are actual virus cells or just remnants of broken virus cell is hard to say

Hope that helps

I have a question..Does <12  Not Detected mean the same as undetected??

Offline gnatcatcher

  • Member
It almost certainly does mean undetected. It is telling you that that particular assay can't COUNT fewer than 12 international units per mL, but it can still detect some if it is there. Your assay is more sensitive (better) than most assays, which can't count fewer than 15.

Quest Diagnostics, for example, says "<15 Not Detected." The result is followed by some text which includes "For more information on this test, go to <link>"  which includes the following:
A "<15 Detected" means the assay was able to detect HCV RNA but was not able to accurately quantitate the viral load. A "<15 Not Detected" means the assay did not detect HCV RNA . . . .

Congratulations!

Hi all,

As you know, I managed to cure mother from Hepatitis C (according to the results she achieved SVR10 - undetected, next step is SVR24).
But something wrong happens with her. Her liver is worst condition now. She has ascites and fever. Moreover, she had the surgery. Her uterus was removed.
Seems her F3 fibrosis developed to F4 stage. It is very sad to me. All of them happened after successful treatment with Harvoni. I was happy that we killed virus and finally her liver would start its healing process. But now we have totally different picture.

I respect the opinion of the community. Is it possible that her liver will start healing process? How long does it take time? Is anybody here who has already been observing the healing of his/her liver?
All your recommendations are brilliant.
I am so hopeful that her liver will regenerate itself, even there are not so many chances   :(

If she has just gone from F3 to F4 she still should be ok I have been F4 for almost 8 years now.

However a fever is a problem and she should see her doctor many things cause fever often infection but cirrhosis does not cause fever.

It is said about 50% of patients with cirrhosis may have imrovemebt with the co diction of their liver but with cure of hep c her liver should not get any worse from this point forwards however we with cirrhosis are at increased risk of liver cancer although that risk is also reduced with cure.

If the ascities is significant the fever could be caused by an infection in the fluid in her abdomin which is very serious. But in any event she should be seen by her doctor soon to find out the reason for her fever.

She can have a long and full live with early cirrhosis as long as she takes care of her liver and flows her doctors recommendations

BIXTER.  I just wanted to add my thanks also for your outstanding work! I'm an accountant and I can appreciate the time it takes to tabulate through all the infos. You produce results that help large number of people in their quest for a cure!
I'm always amazed when thinking about the easy ride we have with Harvoni compared to the previous treatments available. Interferon makes me think of our great old days medicine like Leaches and Blood letting!!!
Although I suffered during my 24 weeks treatment, my sides following the end of treatment are slowly abating.  It will be 24 weeks post in 3 weeks and I'll make sure to post my results as soon as I get them.  Don't hold your breath! I live in Eastern Canada and I think they carry liver test results by mules! It takes upward of 8 weeks to get results here and even if I'd be willing to pay let say $10,000, there is nowhere to buy tests here! I am allowed to buy things that pollute as much as I want but I can't buy health services!
Anyway, please continue and yes, I'm curious to know what happened with Charly8. Maybe Lynn K could send a friendly personal message to let him know we all miss him!  Good luck to everyone!

Hello Mario, thank you so much for your kind words. And believe me, I know what you mean by not being able to buy health service, it can be very frustrating. But 8 weeks is an incredible long time to wait. If you have to wait 8 weeks this time too you will have the results at Christmas Eve. Best Christmas gift ever!

Hello Everyone. I just wanted to report my status. I just tested, and I am Negative. It is about 1 year since the beginning of my treatment, in reality SVR 40.

I give all the glory to my Lord, and savior Jesus Christ. Through him, nothing is impossible.

I will continually pray for everyone.
Have a great afternoon and God Bless!

The first time you hear the words virus undetected the joy of knowing that you have the best chance possible to forget about HCV and how it effects you in everyday life is wonderful!

HCV infection becomes a burden no one should shoulder.

I am so happy that your daughter will have a life without HCV, it is a miracle few thought could happen and your faith in her helped greatly, of this I am certain.

All the best to you and your daughter.

Well by all indications, I think the news is good.  After 12 weeks Harvoni and 24 weeks waiting for it, I did my last lab visit yesterday morning and the results just posted:  HCV RNA UNDETECTED.  My signature is now updated and complete.  By happenstance I visit my IM doc on Tuesday for annual physical.  I'm hoping the term "cured" comes up in our conversation.

I have been extremely lucky through treatment.  I've had absolutely zero side effects.  I was able to handle a rough patch at work and train for and race several bike events during and after treatment. Maybe things will change tomorrow, but for now life is good and I hope for the same for all of you.

Hi all, I haven't posted or even been here in quite a while but, I am now 12 weeks EOT and just got the result ----  Undetectable YAY!

I started with Harvoni and one month in I was undetectable hence fast responder. But my insurance co. was threatening to allow me only three months. so My good doctor got me going on Ribavarin. INS. co. finally covered me with insistence from my nurse and a lot of hassle for the second three months so in total I received 6 months of Harvoni and 5 months combined treatment with Ribavarin.

I am very pleased with this however I am guessing based oninformation gathered that the definitive test will be three months from now!
 Cheers all and good luck,

Jumping the gun a bit, went in for my lab work this am, but do have some preliminary results:

1. 4wk - 12 wk EOT VL status -  7 1/2 weeks Still waiting on results
The early results, and why I'm so HOPEFUL is ALT is 30 and AST is 41. Still below the highs before treatment and within normal range.
2. Treatment duration - 8 weeks
3. tx naive or experienced - tx naive
4. Genotype (1a or 1b) - 1a
5. F1-F4 fibrosis status (date) - Possible F1 based on lab work, but never diagnosed/verified by scan
6. Initial VL (date) - 2362235 (4/13/2015)

Will be able to confirm status (undetectable?  ;D) in a few more days - maybe tomorrow, probably next Monday. My intuition is telling me Hep C is eradicated because every day just feels better and better.

For those still waiting, going through, or thinking about treatment - hang in there and keep fighting - the light is coming and it's SO GOOD!

Peace,
Morphin

P.S. Next item on the action list is to fight/advocate for those unable to obtain treatment due to denials/cost.

My doctor called me today it's official I am undetected 13 weeks SVR. My viral count in the beginning was 1.5 million and geno type 1A. I had to ask my doctor I did not know. I can't help but think of the ones who still have the virus who failed the treatment and how they must feel. But I strongly feel there will be a cure for everyone soon, the light is at the end of the tunnel. No more medicine no more blood tests its all slowly sinking in to my thinking that I am cured. Hurray!

And the mid November will that test be 24 weeks after your treatment ended?

Yes after tx, 12 weeks.  Disappointed it didn't show undetected.  Mid November will be 24 weeks after tx ended.  My ALT and AST are in the 20s and have been since 4 weeks (mid-tx).  Hoping undetected in November.  Thank you.

Lisa Lisa, things are still looking very good for you. Moderator Lucinda Porter, R.N. wrote a helpful article:
http://www.hepmag.com/articles/hepatitis_c_questions_2502_27873.shtml
The relevant portions:
If you are concerned that you may have some residual HCV swimming around in your body, that will someday become a full-blown infection, rest assured, as this is quite unlikely. Hep C replicates a trillion times a day, so “not detected” might as well be zero. It is extremely unlikely that a small amount of HCV will remain alive in your body without having replicated to much higher amounts. In fact, viral load tends to replicate at much higher numbers when treatment fails.
. . .
I just finished HCV treatment, but my viral load was detectable at week 8 and 12.  Does this mean my chances of being cured are low?

No. In the old days, back when treatment was long and used interferon, there were clear milestones that helped us know what our chances were of permanently clearing hepatitis C. Now with new direct-acting antivirals (DAAs), things have changed. Research by the NIH Clinical Center showed that low levels of HCV RNA at the end of treatment are not predictive of treatment response among patients with hepatitis C virus treated with interferon-free regimens. (Clinical Infectious Diseases, March 2, 2015) Harvoni was used in this study, but the trend is likely to apply to all treatments using HCV DAAs.

When I relapsed last year after treating with Sovaldi and Olysio for 12 weeks when I was tested 12 weeks after I finished my viral load was 2.4 million even though I was not detected at week 4 and at EOT 12 weeks.

Hep c doesn't sneek back it comes roaring back if it is coming back.

Been looking for information on post treatment with Harvoni, 12 weeks.  Unable to find any real studies.  This forum has provided some good information, thanks.
In a week I will do my 12 wk. blood work and on November 11th, I should find out if the virus is cleared.  I will post my results than.

A little background, found out I had non-A non-B Hep back in the early 80's.  Around 2002, I decided to try the (excuse spelling, to lazy to look up correct spelling), Sher-Plough, peg-Interferon and ribivian treatment for 48 weeks.  I cleared the virus but relapsed.  Decided to try Harvoni, finish treatment mid-August.

1b, IL28B, CT genotype

AST and ALT markers normally slightly high, for example in 2002, 42 and 45, this was before first treatment.  AST and ALT markers vary over the years.

VL:  05/22/02    220 IU/ml
VL:  08/26/02    <10             this was the beginning of treatment.
VL:  12/10/02    <10
VL:  04/09/03    22500000
VL:  05/10/04    58900000

AST  161  ALT 269  11/15/2005  continue to be high but decreasing for example, 02/14/2008:  AST 80 and ALT 120
Fast forward to 03/24/2015:  AST 46 and ALT 72
VL:  124610 IU/ml
The fibrosis stage:  could not be calculated for this patient.  Testing revealed an unusually high or low value for one or more of the biochemical analytes.

Anyway over the years I have had a few needle biopsy and now a few ultrasounds, results increasing fibrosis.  Latest ultrasound:  "Slightly coarsened hepatic echotexture compatible with cirrhosis is again noted.  No focal hepatic mass is demonstrated. Hepatic length 15cm."

Found my VL results for 6/24/2015 while on Harvoni:   Undetected  test limit <15 IU/mL

Let you know results when I get them.

I have just receive my 12 week EOT results and am happy to report no detected HCV. After 45 years of living with the virus (1B) I did 8 weeks of Harvoni. I was undetected at 4 and 8 weeks (EOT), and now at 20 weeks. All my liver enzymes are well within normal ranges as well. I hope this information will provide hope for those currently undergoing treatment.
