I'm so struggling with insomnia but I don't think I can attribute it to anything harvoni related.....any word on possible long term effects of harvoni tx?????

Hard to have much in the way of long term data as no one has taken Harvoni very far in the past.

I assume even the first patients who took Harvoni in clinical trials were only in the last few years The earliest reference I found to ledipasvir and sovaldi in the electron clinical trial was from March 2013.

So as far as long term effects I expect we pioneers will be the first to know if there is anything to worry about.

But for folks like me with cirrhosis I was beginning to be doubtful I would still be alive in 5 years without these new meds so I am not worried about any post treatment effects other than being able to grow old and die from something other than liver disease.

Best to all dragon slayers

I most likely was infected with Hep C when I was 18 my Doctor told me life expectancy with the virus is 15 years in a undeveloped country and 30 years in a developed country. I am 61 years old now so every year I lived past 48 years old I was thankful. At times I wasn't sure if I would live much longer but the years went by and survived long enough for a cure to be found. My prayers have been answered and long term side effects I don't think about much. Just thankful to be alive and that I feel better than I did.

Honestly, I am so tired. I have been supporting mother in fight with with Hep C more than 8 years. During this period Hep C virus always has won the battle. Harvoni is our hope, otherwise, we have to wait long for a new medicine.

By the way, mother is so depressed. I have never seen such hopeless eyes:(((((
Good luck all of us.

Hi Cute,

I am wondering how you are, it's hard being a carer sometimes,

Hi all - haven't posted for ages, just checked in and seeing some undetected results - woohoo! (Saw yours Else - haha, way to go!). I was undetected at EOT week 4 and just had my EOT 12 (but it's more like 13 1/2) bloods drawn today.  The hep doc said that week 4 is the important one, because 98% of people who are undetected then will remain undetected.  He said of 300 patients he's treated with Harvoni, only 1 has relapsed.

He also said that insurance is now covering earlier stages of fibrosis but I don't know how true that is.

Good luck for 2016, everyone!

I'll chime in too.  Congrats to your daughter and to you!!!  I can only imagine how as a parent you must feel to know she has a full life ahead of her without this burden.   It's so wonderful to see so many getting cured with these new drugs.  I'm so happy for all of us.  And, I'm feeling better and better every day 15 weeks post treatment.

Thanks Concerned Father.  The reason I say that is so many struggle right after treatment and I did feel a little better but was wondering if this is as good as it gets and then this week, all of a sudden I felt better than I had in as long as I can remember.  We have seen other posts who are further down the road since SVR and many things continue to improve for them and I am experiencing that on an energy level and other things... just this week.  Super cool!  You are right, this is a great day!

Congrats Concerned Father.

So happy for both of you and so glad your were there to support your daughter!

Some young people are afraid to even get tested worried their parents will find out because they are on their parents insurance.

Awesome news Scout! This is such a great thread.

Scott, you and my daughter are sharing something in common, you got the great news on the same day.  Lynn, we adopted our daughter when she was 9 months old knowing full well that she had been infected at birth by her biological mother.  The first time we saw her, we both instantly fell in love with her.  Hep C was not an issue but always prayed for a cure and our prayers were answered.  We are so blessed to have her in our lives.

Here's to 2016!!!!  Looks like this is the year where so many warriors are cured!  I haven't checked in for awhile and love seeing all these wonderful results!

May you all have a happy, healthy life and hold your head up high!  The journey has been difficult but we persevered and can now move forward with confidence and compassion for others.  May the fight against cancer, MS and all other chronic diseases come to an end as well.

Thank you Michael Sofia for never giving up in spite of others saying it couldn't be done!  Without his insight and dedication none of us would have had the Harvoni cure.  Thank you sir!  You are my hero!

Katie

http://www.newyorker.com/tech/elements/a-better-treatment-for-hepatitis-c

"Sofia realized that any effective hepatitis-C drug not only needed to get into the liver, where the virus was replicating, but stay there, to avoid unintended side effects elsewhere in the body. It is relatively easy to transport a drug to the liver: when you eat or drink something, it is absorbed into the bloodstream by the stomach and intestines, and in turn flows directly to the liver, the body’s metabolic engine. The problem is that, in their active form, nucleoside drugs don’t enter liver cells. Sofia hypothesized that if he could shroud a nucleoside with an “invisibility cloak” to get it into liver cells he could then count on the liver’s enzymes to break down the cloak and activate the drug. Once the cloak has been shed, the nucleoside would be trapped inside, protecting the rest of the body from exposure. “A lot of people were telling me when I had this idea that this is never going to work,” he told me. “People have been trying to do this for a long time, this is a hopeless cause.”

Man , there are a butt load of un-detected/not-detected rolling in. Seems like the ball is rolling exponentially faster and faster. So good to see all of us posting fantastic results here. Just think that a few years ago this would be unbelievable if not impossible! Such a great time we live in what with all of the new technology and medical break throughs that we are experiencing.

Tommy, it's wonderful to see how many people are posting undetected results. I think when this thread began that the numbers were looking a little scary,,,but now the good results are far outnumbering the relapses, by staggering numbers. What a wonderful time this is for people who have been suffering from this dreadful disease for so long. I can say that emotionally and physically I am soooo much better, now my aches and pains are pretty normal with people my age. I am totally digging it!

Hi...do you have a post for POST 24 weeks of Harvoni? My EOT was 1/13/16 and I am interested in knowing their cure rate. Also interested in knowing if they had post treatment side-effects. I had great patience and grace while on tx but since EOT no patience, no filters on what I say and very very weary. Dumping ammonia the first week and feel like flu symptoms.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums, 2Thrive! Here is a link to the discussion thread for reporting SVR24 on Harvoni: http://forums.hepmag.com/index.php?topic=3205.0

A number of us have experienced some sort of post-treatment syndrome/malaise/whatever. Various theories flying around about what is behind that. I believe it is due (at least in my case) to a temporarily over-stimulated immune system. And the the fluish symptoms you describe, are simply an immune system not being ready to turn off or slow down after 45 years of being dialed up high to keep the HCV under control. I think the rapid clearing of virus (never before possible until these new drugs) leaves our bodies needing to make a LOT of adjustments to find the new normal post-cure. Some bodies take longer than other to find that new normal.

best,
kim

  • Get tested, get treated, get cured, fight Hep c!
Hi 2Thrive and welcome

I am one of the SVR 24 people got my results in October 2015.

I really don't feel different than last year or the year before only side effect I had was anemia from ribavirin that resolved within 10 days after I stopped taking it.

I just feel like someone who is pressing on 58 years old who had hep c for 37 years and cirrhosis for 8 years and could stand to lose 20 lbs or so but mostly I feel fine.

We are generally considered cured at 12 weeks 24 weeks just puts a fork in it I dont think I have seen anyone who made SVR 12 who did not make SVR 24 on the forum.

Cure rates for Harvoni are anywhere from 85% for those with advanced Child "B" or "C" cirrhotics who are on the liver transplant list and are very ill with severe liver disease to 99% for those who are treatment naive with little to no liver damage and low viral load.

What your odds might be depends on your prior treatment history, liver damage, and genotype. Also age, gender, and BMI may also be factors in treatment success.

I had most of the negative treatment factors being a 3 time null responder to interferon based tx, and also relapsing on Sovaldi/Olysio. Also having compensated cirrhosis and being on the high side of overweight with a BMI of about 29.

But even with all that I was cured and likely you will be cured too!

good luck on treatment

2Thrive, the fatigue issue was somewhat my experience post-Tx. During Tx, Harvoni gave me extra energy -- I got an amazing amount done during those 12 weeks. But after Tx, I would periodically have three days in a row when I needed an enormous amount of sleep. That phase did pass -- I now regularly have more energy than before Tx, although not as much as the "Harvoni High" gave me during Tx.

I've also had a lot more aches and pains post-Tx than during Tx (but again, not as bad as some prior years). I've also gained weight that is proving incredibly difficult to lose, since the ramped-up appetite I had on Harvoni has continued.

On the other hand, I am sleeping much better than I have in decades. During this past week, there were three days in a row where I slept 8 hours straight without needing to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Also I definitely have much less dental plaque, and what I have is much easier to remove (my dentist confirms this).

My hepatologist believes it will take more time to find out which of my other ailments were caused by the HCV rather than being separate diagnoses. He's waiting until 9 months post-EOT to do another FibroScan to find out whether my F4 has gone down. (If my 19.5 kPa goes below 12, I won't have cirrhosis any longer.)

Here's hoping you are almost done with the flu-like phase.

It has been a while since I have posted. Sorry to not have all my stats.
Just got my labs for 24 actually almost 30 weeks. I am undetected. Alt and Ast are 34 and 35. My white blood and platelets are a little low but my doc is not concerned.
I guess this is really the start of the next part of life for me. It has been a long ordeal as we all have.
Good luck to all and I will post one year results when they come.

Great Stuff!! Junkyard and JoeK999

I am going on 8 months without hcv and today I noticed something important today about my water works which has not been up to snuff for about 15 YEARS. I am 63 and always thought that I just had the male urine curse! You know the BPH dribble, dribbles.

Now 8 months free from hcv hell I can have my morning 2-3 coffee, a bunch of water and can work until noon without having to take a leak every hour or so! When I exercise hard over an hour or so my urine does not quickly turn dark anymore, which I had grown accustomed to! I just attributed darkened urine and having to take a leak all the time to OMS (old man syndrome!)

So it seems that as cirrhosis backs off your renal system should quickly improve as well. I feel GREAT!!! and all these positive results are absolutely wonderful.
Caution shameless self promotion below :-)
